..Duncan Hunter Calls for...Prisons Director to Be Fired Over Prison Beating of Border Patrol Agent

In a letter to President Bush dated February 6, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) chastised the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) for placing Border Patrol Agent Ignacio Ramos in the general prison population at the Yazoo City Federal Correctional Facility in Mississippi.

Rep. Hunter pointed out that he had written to BOP Director Harley Lappin in January urging that the agents be segregated from the general prison population for their safety. He received a letter from Director Lappin’s assistant at BOP assuring him that they would be segregated from the general population and that all measures would be taken to assure their safety. This was not done, and Agent Ramos was attacked and severely beaten on February 3 by Mexican inmates at the facility.

Rep. Hunter’s February 6 letter to President Bush says:

I was assured by the Bureau of Prisons staff that, subsequent to my letter, agents Compean and Ramos had been segregated from the general prison population and close attention was being paid to their personal safety. Yesterday, I was informed that agent Ramos was assaulted by inmates within the general population.

Placing these two Border Patrol agents in general population, especially when assuring Congress it would not happen, constitutes an enormous dereliction of duty by the Administrator of the Prisons Bureau. It is my recommendation that the assault against agent Ramos be investigated and should it be ascertained that the Bureau did place agent Ramos in the general population, thereby exposing him to danger, Prisons Bureau Director Harley Lappin should be discharged from his position….

Joe Kasper, press secretary for Rep. Hunter told The New American on February 7 that Rep. Hunter is also looking into many other discrepancies surrounding the reported excessive delays in providing agent Ramos with medical attention after the attack and the transfer of Ramos from his safer minimum security prison in New Mexico to the more dangerous facility in Mississippi. “There are so many things wrong with this case, from the very beginning,” said Kasper. “Congressman Hunter has repeatedly pointed out that the excessive sentence here — 11 and 12 years for the two agents — when most the average sentence for murderers is only eight-and-a half years,” is totally unreasonable. If they received any penalty at all, he noted, it should have been the usual reprimand and several days of administrative leave for failing to file the required incident report.

The national attention and uproar that the case has been receiving has helped Rep. Hunter’s bill (H.R. 563) for a Congressional pardon for agents Compean and Ramos. “We’re now up to 81 sponsors, including Congressman Hunter,” said Kasper, and pressure continues to build for President Bush to pardon them.

Yazoo City Federal Correctional Facility

Is this where the term "up the Yazoo" originated?

Unfortunately, Hunter's petitions will probably fall on deaf ears.

If I may?: The Bureau of Prisons has extensive contracts with US Air Force to operate light security inmate camps on their property. Examples included Elgin AFB in FL and Nellis AFB in North Las Vegas, NV.

For two years I ran the Jail Operation Course for new Academy Trainees. Amongst the the items which were in the course, was an incident from (I think from Santa Barbara County, CA.

In that case, a jailer was sent to federal prison after he placed a inmate into a tank which housed members of a gang known for attacking members of other gangs.

The US District Court in the sentencing stated words to the effect of"... the (Defendant) was a experienced jailer, he knew the consequences of placing (xxxx) into a tank which contained enemies".

As all Prison Wardens are political animals, they would only have placed this BCP Officer into general population with the prior approval of their boss.

I think a third year law student could make a case of attempted murder against whoever made or approved of those decisions.

If you think that a third year law student could, as you say, make a case for attempted murder, then it follows that the former BP agent's attorney(s) would be right on top of the situation. Or are the defense attorneys in on the scheme to kill the men? Why is all this supposedly nefarious stuff happening to these two, and how far up the food chain do you actually think this murder plot goes?

As honorable as Duncan Hunter is, he will not be the party's nominee. I am glad that we have him here in California given the the two moonbats in the other chamber. He is a bright spot indeed.

The 'Hinky" Meter is maxing out concerning this case. Based on Dubya's overall attitudes towards borders and security issues, I believe it is by design.

Remember, Dubya (via his agent AG Gonzales) sent a 12 man SWAT Team during the hours of darkness to serve a misdemeanor warrant on Dog Chapman at the request of the Mexican government. And don't kid yourself, high profile cases like this are watched very closely by politicians. The high level bureaucrats watch and listen very closely to their masters words.

If this Administration wanted a low profile on this case, the two border patrol guys would have been on the first flight to a 'Club Fed' like Nellis AFB the day they were taken into custody.

But everything involving this has been handled in a manner to ensure there will lots of negative publicity.

So it comes down to the question of why?

Based on my experience, training, and background, I believe it is part of a program to ensure a Democrat follows Dubya into the office of POTUS.

The politicians know that nothing can be hidden forever, some real bombshells will come out from this case.

We are starting to see this with the relevations that Chertoff makes a practice of lying to Congress.

As to the BCP guy's attorneys?

That would required a thread of it's own. I'm only guessing here as I've never met them. I suspect they were totally out of their league. If the government ever release the transcripts (without the sealed portions) then we'll known.

I'll be calling a few attorneys I know to gather what I can.

23 hours hours of isolation would be heaven for me. no phones ringing, no people yakking, no bleed-over noise from stupid headphones; just alone with my own thoughts.

That's my question as well. Why was he in general population? Another post says that he was originally in isolation, but chose to leave in order to phone his wife. If that is correct, then why was he in isolation; why wasn't he escorted in order to protect him; and why are they in Mississippi?

Well, good for Rep. Hunter. This should get him a bit of publicity.

Regarding your tagline "Secure the borders first". Could you, please, explain? Secure before what?
