Two Men Who Rapped to Get Out of Parking Ticket Sue Tempe, Arizona

Two men who were asked to rap to get out of a ticket are seeking large amounts of money for what they believe was a violation of their civil rights.

One of the men has filed a claim against the city of Tempe for $50,000 and the other filed a claim for half a million dollars. A claim is the first legal step toward a lawsuit against a government entity.

James Baker and Robert Tarvin, who are black, were shown rapping on a segment of the police-produced cable-TV show "Tempe StreetBeat" after Tempe police Sgt. Chuck Schoville pulled them over for littering in August.

The sergeant, who is white, is shown checking Baker's identification and having Tarvin pick up the litter before asking the two men to do a rap song about littering. The two complied.

Tarvin's claim asks for $50,000 and requests that some of the money be used for "community awareness training" for police.

So these two "rappers" think the police made them look stupid - I can only guess they do not have mirrors in their houses.

When this video originally was reported it looked like everyone involved was having a laugh. Some slip and fall lawyer got to these two and flashed dollar signs at them. What a bunch of crap.

"No, no! I was telling them that they needed 'therapy' not to be 'the rappists'! They just started into it right there! This is all a misunderstanding..."

I'll take "The Rapists" for $500, Trebek.

I think everyone who got a parking ticket should sue for no being given the chance to rap.

Yep. Is it any wonder relations between the black community and the police are strained? Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Sue, sue sue. Get what you can. Pathetic.

Is this a great country, or what? Everything in this country costs much more than it should because we have become such a litigious society. You have to carefully weigh everything you say before you say it, just in case you might offend someone. Whiners, lawyers and insurance companies clean up and we cower further in the corner everyday. (Sorry for the rant, this stuff just sets me off!)

I got a $100 ticket for not wearing a seat belt. I gladly would have rapped in lieu of the fine.
