Nussle on Giuliani [Rich Lowry]
Here’s a pro-Giuliani bit from Jim Nussle that I pass along for what it’s worth:
Dear Rich, I wanted to share with conservatives why I'm supporting Mayor Giuliani. As a proud and consistent conservative Republican, I want our Party and our ideas to have a voice. Even more importantly, I want our Party and our ideas to achieve meaningful results.
“Perfect” has become the enemy of the “good”, and we saw that borne out during this past November’s elections. I am hopeful that our Party will avoid needless debates over a non-existent perfect candidate.
It is true that Mayor Giuliani and I don’t agree on every issue. My support for a person who doesn’t see eye to eye with me on all issues doesn’t mean that I am turning my back on those beliefs. But our country is at a crossroads and we cannot forsake progress for perfection.
I have chosen to support Mayor Giuliani because I believe we need to embrace the ideals and the values that unite us. It is the only way we can successfully move forward as both a Party and a country.
Rudy Giuliani is the results Republican our country needs. Mayor Giuliani took office facing difficult challenges. New York City was littered with crime, corruption and decay. The city’s murder rate was so high that an uncommon day was one with only a few murders.
The Mayor led a team that reduced crime and reformed welfare. He cut taxes 23 times while actually reducing the size of the City bureaucracy. The Mayor transformed a historic deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus with a balanced budget. New York City became a safe place for families and small businesses to invest in their future. In Rudy Giuliani, New Yorkers had a leader. One they could believe in.
All of this he did before the tragedy of September 11, 2001. That day the rest of the world witnessed Mayor Giuliani’s steady and principled leadership firsthand.
Today, America needs to make progress in so many difficult areas, and on so many fronts that while addressing challenges with philosophical absolutes makes for good rhetoric, it oftentimes achieves little by way of results.
After over 20 years in public service, I am still confident that free enterprise, living the American Dream and putting the protection of our nation first are the right ideals for the direction of this country.
Rudy Giuliani has consistently governed under these ideals, turning rhetoric into results, which is why I am confident President Rudy Giuliani will be best for our country come November 2008.

(((((PING))))))
Perfect has become the enemy of the good,
Indeed.
Thanks for your ping list, areafiftyone; it's fun to read all these opinions on Rudy. Stay with it!
He has summed it up in a nutshell!
You are quite welcome and good morning to you. Another bright sunny day in Freeperville! :-)
Excellent. An actual common sense conservative. I was starting to think that was a dying breed.
Framing a discussion about prospective candidates in a fraudulent manner like this is a clear sign of Rudy Giuliani's weaknesses as a prospective nominee. I don't know a single Freeper opposed to Giuliani who insists on having a "perfect" candidate at all. It's just that it would be nice to get a GOP candidate who is conservative on more than 15% of the issues.
LOL! You haven't been reading the Rudy posts lately have you?
Their mantra is:
He's not good enough, not smart enough and gosh darn it I HATE HIM!
Pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, anti-family, pro-gun confiscation, pro-hate crimes. What's not to like?
It's thrilling to know that Giuiliani so perfectly embodies the ideals and values of (social) liberals everywhere.
The Hoover Institute, to which Reagan is an Honorary Fellow, thinks Rudy would be good for the GOP and make a good president.

It will come down to two or three candidates for President. It's almost impossible to get one who will agree with EVERYTHING we stand for.
Nice!
Their mantra is:
He's not good enough, not smart enough and gosh darn it I HATE HIM!
LOL: now we know you're a liberal plant, you just quoted a joke from AL FRANKEN!!!!!!
That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!
LOL! ;-)
Of course - that is what it is supposed to be. Not everyone is perfect.
Don't bet on it. However, I am confident that if Rudy is the nominee, he will get so many votes from various segments of the voting population, that the stay-at-home-and-sulk crowd won't have an impact.
I am happy to report that among my liberal Jewish friends, there is suddenly great disgust with the Democrats, due in large part to Jimmy Carter. All of these people are very open to voting for Rudy.
I know quite a few Democrats and Gun owning Conservatives who will vote for Rudy in a NY minute!
LOL!!
Rudy can win my vote.
He has to:
Denounce abortion.
Denounce gun-control.
Denounce the gay agenda.
He has to do it before the Iowa Caucus.
Then I'll be interested.
You forgot to add that he is pro-amnesty. Then again.. by the time the election rolls around, we'll have waved the white flag of surrender, so it won't really be an issue..
sw
That could be dangerously taken to the level of Democrat support, especially when major issues in contention blur the line of demarkation from "R" to "D". Only a fool will compromise his virtue and then expect that virtue to remain intact.
BINGO, WE HAVE A WINNER!!
Amazing how Republicans and Conservatives will turn on their own as quickly as a rabid dog. For shame!
Hillary.
Why would you be interested in voting for someone that moves their positions on issues that you agree with, just to get your vote?
BINGO, WE HAVE A WHINER!!
There, that's better!
I have lived in New York City for 37 years now. I saw do-nothing NYC mayors John Lindsay, Abe Beame, Ed Koch, and (worst of all) David Dinkins. New York City was the cliché "Fort Apache: The Bronx", that inescapable feeling like being lost in enemy territory.
Then came Rudy and things changed very quickly. There was an immediate police presence in the city. It felt safer to live here right away. Rudy was a commander in this city. He was an anti-polititian. He was straight-forward and honest. Most of all, he was the hardest working mayor I have ever seen. He changed New York City in many ways for the better, and those changes are still having an impact. It takes a very tough leader to effect change in New York City.
Then came 9/11. We New Yorkers knew we were in good hands with Rudy. The rest of the country learned what we already knew. Rudy is a great leader. And Rudy would do great and everlasting things for the United States if given the chance to be President.
Good Post!
But not out of character ...
True!
I think he'll clear up the gun control issue. And I think he'll clarify the abortion and gay issues although not to everyone's satisfaction.
I can't wait for him to announce as I think some of these problems will go away and that there will be more at ease with him.
"I know quite a few Democrats and Gun owning Conservatives who will vote for Rudy in a NY minute!"
Unless Richardson gets the DNC nomination. In that case, the GOP would be screwed. Can you imagine, the NRA endorsing a Democrat for president??
A true denunciation of prior beliefs can represent a sincere change of mind.
If I had to choose between voting for Hillary, for some Libertarian Party candidate, for some Constitution Party candidate, for no one, or for some Republican who has come around to pro-life, pro-gun, and pro-family, then why would I be such a stubborn cuss as to let Hillary win?
I'm just glad FR does not mirror the Republican voting public.
I'm expecting the NRA to endorse Duncan Hunter. I don't expect them to endorse any of the others and I don't think they do either.
Pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, anti-family, pro-gun confiscation, pro-hate crimes is NOT my own. Never will be.
It's even more amazing those who've turned into lily-livered RINO's abandoning the principles that define the Republican party.
I meant Nuzzle not Rudy.
See #43
Just for the record, I was not addressing you!
Please do not change my post without my permission.
"I'm expecting the NRA to endorse Duncan Hunter. I don't expect them to endorse any of the others and I don't think they do either."
Actually Richardspon won an NRA endorsement for governor only a few months ago.

From the article:
Richardson said he has earned a concealed-carry permit himself. "I am not packing today, though," he said, "because I have plenty of State Police officers here to protect me." That drew a laugh at the shooting range.
