How much is too much child support? Mom asks court for $28K a month
The Atlanta-Journal Constitution ^ | 01/21/07 | BETH WARREN

Posted on 01/20/2007 6:33:55 PM PST by FreedomCalls

At last count, Florida attorney Willie Gary raked in roughly $1 million a month. Featured on the TV show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," the 59-year-old lives in a sprawling, $6 million waterfront home in Stuart, Fla. His law firm, which recently employed former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell, has three posh offices and owns two jets, including a 32-passenger Boeing 737 outfitted with an 18-karat gold sink and a $1.2 million sound system.

But just how much money is too much money to pay in child support? Atlanta resident Diana Gowins — the mother of twins fathered by Gary — could find out soon.

The 36-year-old is seeking to have reinstated a $28,000 a month judgment that was slashed last year to $5,000 by a judge who cited concerns about Gowins' spending habits and lack of a job. ...Gowins has sole custody of the twins.

... Gary's attorneys said he was willing to pay $14,000 a month until he found out Gowins had stopped putting money into a college fund for the twins and was instead spending much of the cash on herself.

A lot of people raise two kids quite well on $28,000 a year.

If he can afford a gold sink then he can surely afford 28K a month in child support.

I'm still shaking my head in disgust at the gold sink....does it emit holy water as well.

Hey if dad is making 1 cool million a month, 28K is not a lot to ask. The children are entitled to have the same sort of perks as dad, including a nurse called Mom.

child support payments have apparently been going towards her $600,000 home in south Atlanta, splurging on designer clothes, cruises without the kids and a tummy tuck. She also spent thousands of his money on a Steinway piano, as well as private school tuition and diamonds for her oldest child, a teenage daughter from a previous relationship.

I don't think that the 6 yo's are the ones getting the perks

That is the hardly the point. The point is "child support", not a lifestyle comparable to their father's. Like the liberals do with taxes, this woman wants a certain (huge) percentage of her ex's income for herself, in the name of child support. ("It's for the children")

"Gary's attorneys said he was willing to pay $14,000 a month until he found out Gowins had stopped putting money into a college fund for the twins and was instead spending much of the cash on herself"

WORTH REPEATING..."spending much of the cash on herself"

This is what happened TO ME for 17 years !!

I have and am distraught about my money that was suppose to be going for raising my only Daughter was only a little slice of what I was paying.

My EX didn't (and still doesn't) supply my 19 year old Daughter with her own Bedroom !!

Then, after it was to end per Law, my EX not only tried to extend it, but RAISE it - after it was suppose to end !!

Thank God I stood up for myself (LIKE A GOOD FREEPER...) and brought it up to District Court and Won.

If he can afford a gold sink then he can surely afford 28K a month in child support.

Sure he can afford it, but what's the point of paying it of it's not going towards child support but instead is, quote:

"going towards her $600,000 home in south Atlanta, splurging on designer clothes, cruises without the kids and a tummy tuck. She also spent thousands of his money on a Steinway piano, as well as private school tuition and diamonds for her oldest child, a teenage daughter from a previous relationship."
And there's this:
Gary's attorneys said he was willing to pay $14,000 a month until he found out Gowins had stopped putting money into a college fund for the twins and was instead spending much of the cash on herself.

I remember about 10-12 years ago when Suzanna Cooke divorced Jack Kent Cooke and went to court several times to complain about the child support she was getting. If I remember right, he paid for school and not much else--maybe $2k a month and then not even that after everything was put into the trust. It was ugly. Suzanna complained she couldn't even afford riding lessons for the tot. Tragedy indeed as they lived in horse country, VA.

BTW, both names, Suzanne and Jacqueline are pronounced with an "ah" where the 'a's are -- as in SuzAHnAH and JAHk-leeene. Gotta pronounce them correctly or Suzanna would be annoyed.

Actually, I think it's way below the guideline and should be close to $280,000 a month for 2 kids.

Exactly what I was thinking. Why doesn't dad set up a college fund? I don't know anything about Georgia child support guidelines, but in many states 20% of income is considered standard. I can't even imagine a court awarding her $200,000/month.

Just because someone has a gold sink, doesn't mean they own it. I got 3 of 'em, and don't actually own a single one of them. The bank owns them, though a sharp lawyer might be able to make the case that I'm a fractional owner. Besides, gold sinks aren't made out of gold anyway. Sheesh, people get worked up over the dumbest stuff. Next thing you know they'll hammer the guy cause he's got silver colored mufflers on his cars.

Saudis are heathen barbarians; I expect the most crass displays from them. But in theory a lawyer is an educated person. I guess the barbarian comes out in someone like this lawyer.

>>> The children are entitled to have the same sort of perks as dad,<<<

So, in your world, children are to coddled, indulged, spoiled and warped with material things to the tune of 28K/month - on a par with an adult parent? Interesting child rearing theory.

Wonder if the mother has any plan to teach some values and morals that they should also recieve?

At 28K/mo. these kids are most likely doomed to lives without meaning and/or a rough awakening when the faucet is turned off.
