INSIDE HEALTH CARE FDA OKs trial on vitamin C for cancer Cancer Treatment Centers runs research

Adding more credibility to its research into alternative methods for oncologic medical care, Cancer Treatment Centers of America said it has won federal approval to begin a clinical trial studying the potential of intravenous vitamin C as a cancer treatment.

While winning U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to begin clinical trials is a regular occurrence for traditional cancer researchers such as the nation's elite comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute, Zion-based Cancer Treatment Centers is not known for conducting federally approved research--making the FDA-approved vitamin C trial a bit of a coup for the firm.

"Our vitamin C research protocol is the first investigator-initiated protocol approved by the FDA in the history of CTCA," said Christopher Lis, the firm's vice president of research and development. "We are now taking our research here to the next level."

Lis said there will be a limited number of patients who will actually receive the therapy. "Only patients who have exhausted all other conventional treatment options are eligible to receive the therapy," Lis added.

The first phase of the trial is to examine the "optimal therapeutic dose in a series of 18 patients" and largely see whether the treatment is safe and tolerable to patients. Additional studies will be needed that could take several years to show whether it is effective and could lead to FDA-approved treatment.

The FDA confirmed Cancer Treatment Centers' "investigational" new drug application but would not comment further.

Potential medical uses of vitamin C gained notoriety in the 1970s because of the efforts of researchers such as Nobel laureate Linus Pauling.

I read an article many years ago about the possitive effect Vit. C had on some cancers. I've never forgotten that article and have wondered about it over the years.

Can you recall the type of cancers that Vitamin C is supposed to help?

How long will it be before the herb-haters come out of the woodwork spouting garbage from quackwatch.com on this thread?

I don't see why it shouldn't be tested. More power to them. Let's hope they're on to something.

No I can't. This was years ago, but I do remember reading the article in some magazine while waiting in a doctors office, but I don't even remember the kind of magazine it was. And I remember that massive amounts of vit. C was used.

I'm in total agreement with you.

But there's a contingent here on FR who hate anything to do with alternative therapies. I'm not sure why, but they get irate about the issue.

Well, I have metastatic carcinoid, and I'm all for anything that will help. I would feel the same way, though, even if I didn't have cancer.

God has blessed me, though, in that my cancer is very slow growing and can be managed. I visited just last week with one of the world's leading carcinoid specialists, who told me he expects me to live for another 35 - 40 years. So there is no cure right now, but it grows slowly enough that when it moves, we can counter that move with various treatments and/or surgeries.

Hopefully, as the cancer paradigm changes back to a more reasonable view (other than just surgery and poison) there will be some more options available, especially for people with your condition.

God Bless you.

There is MUCH info about intravenous Vit C on the Internet. There's a clinic in Wichita that is quite famous for intravenous Vit C. Here's one link.
