The comet is now far enough within the SOHO field that the big diffraction "blob" smearing at the edge of the field is dissipated, and the separate head and tail are visible.

Mercury has also lost its diffraction 'spikes', and is below and now well to the left of center.

LOL! I just noticed that the SOHO URL I used for the big picture is the self-updating one. No need to post updates -- just make sure your cache is clear and hit "UPDATE" or "RELOAD".

To get the entire transit sequence, I guess we can go to the .GZ archives at http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/LATEST/ after the comet has gone on its merry way back out into space...

The comet is so large that I'm beginning to wonder if we will be able to see the entire tail within the SOHO LASCO-3 field...

It's over 76-90 million miles + away, and looking at the size of it makes me wonder.
Q-> Why do we have no data to establish the size of this giant in the heaven ???

SOHO not updating images.
It's been over 11 hours, since last image.
This is not normal.

According to what I've read -- and in reports from folks who have seen it -- McNaught is a comparatively small object. OTOH, it is extremely bright.

I'm not sure how the LASCO-3 sensors on SOHO react to brightness, (except for the saturation spiking) but the apparent comet size (relative to Mercury) in the SOHO views may be a brightness artifact...

Fantastic and beautiful! Would I ever love to see that!!!

I'd guess the striations on the tail correlate to variations in the solar wind...

That must have been a really close-pass perihelion -- I've never seen a comet tail that tightly curved.

I guess we can wrap up this thread, because the SOHO movie of the McNaught pass around the sun has been immortalized on the APOD website...

Made this little movie with Celestia. Excuse the low resolution. Was trying to keeep the file size small.

That is a remarkable simulation!

I have Celestia, but, for some reason, I find it much more dificult to orient myself in it than I do in Stellarium. Perhaps I just haven't spent enough time to figure it out, yet...

For example, I might be able to plot a moving dot, but, have no idea how you created the image of the comet -- with the "solar wind-blown" tail.

Thank you!!
