Our problem is that individual liberty, in general, is suffering, due to the dysfunctional behavior of this minority. Even worse, people who should know better actually boast, of "making the streets safer", by restricting the constitutional liberties of us all.
I spent 28 years as a cop on the South and West sides of Chicago. Based on my andectodal experience, much discussions with homicide investigators, and studying surveys of vctims and offenders in big cities, I have discovered that the large majority (up to 70%) of both victims and offenders have criminal records. I have even seen surveys that indicate that the victims have even more serious records than the offenders.
This does seem to indicate that both the victims and offenders often engage in activities that put them at risk to be victims or offenders in murder. When you deal or purchase illegal drugs, do burglaries and deal with fences, take out or collect juice loans, are involved in violently abusive relationships, run with gangs, or any number of criminal enterprises, than your odds of being involved in a homicide grow exponentialy. I am not saying that these folks deserve to get killed but they often seem hell bent on doing so. The best way to control homicide is to control this small subset of the population rather than to pretend that we are all equally at risk for this menace. The PERCENTAGES of the murdered remain pretty consistent as to criminal demographics and particularly race. As a black man who lives in the black community, the reality of the latter is particularly disturbing, but is an inevitable by product of the cultural chaos wrought by liberalism, the Great Society welfare state, and Democratic big city politics.
Of course there are the genuinely innocent victims of murder. These folks get the page one newspaper coverage. When some lowlife gets snuffed that you will read of it on page 3 of the Metro section.
The reason that we have the RKBA is so that we may participate with our privately held individual firearms of ordinary military utility when called upon as citizens-soldiers of the second amendment's "well regulated" (disciplined and trained) Militia that is "NECESSARY to the security of a free state". An incidental benefit is that since these weapons are PRIVATELY owned than we have them available for self defense against any variety of criminal. While the individual citizen can and does benefit from this right hundreds of thousands of times a year in lawful self defense with firearms, It is illusory to believe that gun ownership by the law abiding will affect the criminally inclined who murder and get murdered. We need the 2nd amendment as a final check against the would be despots amongst us who would tyrannize us.
