Capitol Hill Rejects Claim That 9/11 Was Avoidable

(AP) WASHINGTON -- A lengthy Senate investigation has debunked charges by a Republican congressman that military analysts identified Mohamad Atta and other Sept. 11 hijackers before the attacks, according to a committee aide familiar with the report.

In a letter to members of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sens. Pat Roberts and John D. Rockefeller dismissed suggestions by Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., that defense analysts ignored analysis that could have prevented the attacks. Roberts, R-Kan., is outgoing chairman and Rockefeller, of West Virginia, is the senior Democrat who will assume the chairmanship next month.

They concluded "there was no evidence Mohamad Atta or any hijackers were identified prior to 9/11," said the committee aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the aide was not authorized to speak publicly on the subject.

An internal Pentagon assessment already had dismissed Weldon's charges as unfounded. But the letter from Roberts and Rockefeller is the first rejection from Capitol Hill. The letter was obtained and first reported Tuesday by the Los Angeles Times.

Weldon, a 10-term Republican who lost his seat in the Nov. 7 election, repeatedly contended a secret military unit called "Able Danger" searched large amounts of data to link four Sept. 11 hijackers to al-Qaeda more than a year before the attacks.

In September, the Pentagon's inspector general found some employees recalled seeing an intelligence chart identifying Atta as a terrorist before the attacks. But the report said those accounts "varied significantly" and witnesses were inconsistent at times in their statements.

At the time, Weldon questioned the "motives and the content" of the report and rejected its conclusions, which he said relied on cherry-picked testimony. Weldon could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

According to the committee aide, Roberts and Rockefeller found similar problems in their investigation.

Weldon lost his seat to Democrat Joe Sestak, a retired Navy admiral who called for troops to be withdrawn by the end of 2007.

Just weeks before the election, the FBI raided the homes of Weldon's daughter and a close friend in an investigation of whether the congressman improperly helped the pair win lobbying and consulting contracts.

Ok.

Now will Congress investigate why the US military was spying on American citizens with this "Abel Danger" program?

Doubt it.

It is the Congress that tied the CIA's and FBI's hands in the pre-911 years. Of all the institutions of government, it is Congress that bears the most blame for its failure to prevent 911, and it has never been held accountable. So it's not surprising that the Congress would issue a report whitewashing the situation.

All of these Senators were IN the Senate at the time of "Able Danger"...so it is in their interest for Able Danger to have never happened.

Sadly, it probably was avoidable. We had already been attacked by these people several times, and there was plenty of chatter that another attack was on its way.

But in the absence of yet another attack, there was no political will to do what would have been necessary to stop it. There was no political will to remove the Gorelick Wall between intel and law enforcement, for example, there was no political will to use openly ethnic profiling at security checks, there was no political will to go into Afghanistan to root out Bin Ladin.

Now, post 911, post Madrid's 311 and London's 711, I can predict that another attack is coming, and we still don't have the political will to do anything more than we are doing now. We have had key counter-terror programs exposed in the press, either by rogue CIA or rogue congressmen from the intelligence committee, and no political will exists to put them on trial for treason. Bin Ladin has pulled back into Pakistan, and we do not yet have the political will to go in and get him. The borders have yet to be sealed. The terror masters in Tehran and Damascus still sleep sound in their beds, and the madrassas, and the state school systems of the middle east continue to poison the minds of the young, preparing the next generation of mass murderers. We know its coming, but until the next attack comes, we've gone as far as we can politically go.

I think it was Bush's FBI that told an agent concerned about terrorists in pilot training to STFU.

You may be right. I used to say that it would take another 9/11 to wake the nation up and make a serious effort to win this war. Nowadays, I don't think anything catastrophic will have the desired effect from our side. And it's not just because of the election. We've accepted Islamic violence and moved on.

Regardless what rockefeller [he who himself is guilty of treason] says, we who have followed this from the start know Curt Weldon is right and rockefeller is lying through his teeth. Unfortunately the truth about TWA 900, OKC bombing and 9/11 will probably never be known by the general public, thanks to burgler and his many 'search and destroy' missions to the AG.

Anyone who says that it was known by anyone in government what the muzzie crazies were going to do, how they were going to do it, what they were going to do it with, and what day and time they were going to do it on is blowing smoke. 9/11 could not have been prevented if even one of these variables were unknown.

Of all of the stories that have been written concerning 9/11, I can't remember reading one where anyone could make the claim that all these factors were known beforehand. Has anyone else? If so, please provide a link.

The muzzie crazies are going to do what they are going to do regardless of any security measures. We can't cover everything. The only solution for preventing any further acts of terrorism on our soil by the crazies is to ban the practice of islam in America and ship out those who continue to follow it.

One of these days all civilized nations will be saying the same thing. Isolate and quarantine the crazies from entering any civilized nation A.S.A.P.

But that would necessitate tight border control, which will never happen in America because of the salad bowl mentality of our fearless leaders.

Had the Able Danger Project had information that could
have placed Bush in a bad light rather than Clinton,
then all of the info would have been leeked long ago to
liberal papers.

The situation would be being tried in the court of
public opinion via the media non stop. Chris Matthews
would be having heart palpitations.

It was obvious that the Pentagon had things to hide
from the get go. Tony Schaffer was immiediately cast
as a wacko who lost his security clearence for stealing
Pentagon pens and using his issued phone for private
calls. The typical "nut or slut" response to whistle
blowers.

There is much more to this buried beneath, but don't
expect the libs in the press trying to dig it up as
they prefer it remain buried. Jamie Gorelick ON the
9/11 penal instead testifying IN FRONT of is a
shinning example of the Clintonoid playing CYA....JJ61

"Sadly, it probably was avoidable."

Agreed, there were so many red flags thrown up in the three years prior to 911...so many "underlings" who WERE on the job and keeping vigil for our safety...when they blew the whistle they were mostly ignored and told to STFU.

I agree.
If 9-11 didn't KEEP the attention of this nation, nothing will. I think there will be more and more attacks over the next 10-15 years and each one will be worse than the previous and the American people will be more concerned with "who knew about it first" rather than punishing "those who DID it!"
