The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee denies a congressman's claim that military analysts identified the hijackers before the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist strikes.
A summery of the committee's investigation obtained by the Los Angeles Times said claims that military analysts identified hijacker Mohamed Atta or his colleagues before the 2001 attack are false, the newspaper said Monday.
The findings contradict statements made by Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., and some U.S. military officers that a program known as Able Danger identified Atta as a member of an al-Qaida cell in New York but the information was ignored by U.S. national security officials, including then-national security adviser Stephen J. Hadley.
Able Danger did not identify Mohammed Atta or any other 9/11 hijacker at any time prior to Sept. 11, 2001, top ranking Republicans and Democrats said in an eight-page letter to panel members after a 16-month investigation.
The committee said some terror suspects identified by the program may have resembled Atta, and the program's chart contained names of al-Qaida associates that sound like Atta, as well as numerous variations of the common Arab name Mohamed.

The book was published by Judith Regan's division at Harper Collins, BTW. Just thought I'd throw that in :)

I have heard Brit Hume and other media folks saying that it is the definitive book about 9/11...
I just wonder if the Triple Cross book, Lance's other books differ from The Looming Tower in the conclusions they come to.

Yes...and they also went to great lengths to punish Lt. Tony Scheaffer also, IIRC.
Probably the lame duck Republicans on the committee got no support or cooperation from the FBI, the Justice Department, or the Pentagon on this, and they are already worried about their treatment under an incoming Democrat chairman of the committee.
As already said, if Weldon was imagining this, then why were they so eager to cover everything up? Why did the FBI mount a fake investigation against him right before the election? Why did the military order the records to be destroyed?

I'll put my money on the Able Danger guys. I think politicians are liars first and foremost and they lack credibility. The Able Danger guys have nothing to gain by fabricating a report of this nature.

BTW..I know for SURE that Rockefeller, who is now going to run the Senate Intelligence Committee has done everything in his power from the get-go, to get Bush.
I don't think there was ever, for a second, a chance that Pres. Bush's policies would get a fair shake in that committee...and now, with the Dems as majority, I betcha that Rockefeller is behind the scenes pushing the Dems in the House to file for impeachment.

the Weldon case was a perfect example of the unelected "cabal" - that permanent beauracratic core that makes up agencies like state, CIA, DOJ, and DoD - acting to take down a "troublemaker".

my guess is, the guy the "cabal" fears most - is Rudy. Because he's a washington outsider, and he's not a person who would have been expected to be anywhere near the presidency, had it not been for a one in a million event like 9/11.
