One In Five Hispanics In America Lack Sufficient Food
All Headline News ^ | December 21, 2006 | Linda Young

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Disturbing statistics on the number of Hispanics who daily go hungry in America was released at a press conference on Wednesday by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). The national Hispanic civil rights group found that nearly one in five people lack nutritious food.

NCLR officials said in a press release that increasing federal nutrition assistance programs would help decrease the growing "food insecurity" faced by 19.6 percent of Latinos in America.

"Lack of access to resources is forcing far too many Latino families into choices no one should have to make, such as between having a roof over their heads or putting food on the table. A lack of affordable, nutritious food also has devastating health consequences, such as increasing hunger and obesity, affecting not only the Latino community but the well-being of our entire nation," Janet Murgua, NCLR President and CEO, said in the statement.

Hispanics are the largest minority in America.

BBC news reported on Thursday that one of the study's authors, Jennifer Ng'andu, said that when it came to issues of hunger and malnutrition in the U.S. that the Latino community was "practically invisible."

According to the study, although lack of food is more of a problem for Hispanics than for whites in America, it is still African Americans who are most likely to go hungry every day.

The study found that the number of Hispanics going hungry was three percent higher than for non-Hispanic whites and eight percent lower than for non-Hispanic blacks, BBC reported.

I have YET to see a single, emaciated body in the streets of my town.

And you?

Man, I just LOVE this time of year when everyone wants their hand in my pocket. *Rolleyes*

I live in a very Hispanic neighborhood in a city with a high Hispanic population and the one thing that crosses my mind when I walk down the street is: haven't these people heard of the South Beach Diet?

A press release from the same folks who want Arizona returned to Mexico.

A lack of affordable, nutritious food also has devastating health consequences, such as increasing hunger and obesity,

So they're hungry AND obese? Now there's a trick.

You'd think with all those vegetables they're picking, they could manage to smuggle out a healthy meal or two.

"Lack access," meaning: subsidies.

I recently saw a news article complaining Africans were becoming too fat.

Too fat, too thin.

Wealthy countries can't win. Now we have to send Bow-flex machines. Bush's fault. etc

Seems to me that if this is true (I see sooooooooo many fat hispanics), we should stop importing poverty!!!!!

Besides, I don't believe a thing that comes out of La Raza's mouths.

I can't conjure up any sympathy for those who are here illegally-it was their choice to come here and starve, and physically violating American sovereignty doesn't give them the right to be cared for on our dime.

This is what happens when you rely on the government for your survival. Communism and Socialism are the best diets to ever come down the pike. I wonder how many hispanics "lack food" in Mexico and the other Central and South American countries.

And unlike thier former homes in Mexico, they can just stroll right down to the local foodbank, (no ID Required) get all the free grub they can carry, then sell it at the weekend in the nearest flea market.....

Funny that, eh???

A subtitle from my time spent in Los Angeles (UCLA area; 1995-2005) could be:
"Let me tell you about chunky Hispanic chicks".

Of course, there were some very hot ones as well.
But emaciated Hispanics? Never saw a one, even if they looked like
they just arrived from their dash across the border.

Oh please. I keep hearing about how one in every (x - fill in the group) lacks food. Knowing not only the largesse of the Federal and state governments but the generosity of local agencies, I'd say they're only lacking food if they're too drunk or stoned to get to the handout spot. And that ain't my fault.

Hi All-

Everyone on this board must have seen the typical, 15-year-old, overweight Mexican girls running around with their absurd "belly" shirts (with the gut hanging over) and thong underwear. What they lack is a decent, full-length mirror before leaving the house in the morning.

Guess what we had for supper? Fish tacos and rice and beans, LOL! The 'All American Cheap Meal' for Po' Folk like us. :)

Chopped fish (caught this past summer), chopped onion & seasonings fried up. Corn taco shells, shredded lettuce, tartar sauce and some shredded cheese. I shredded the lettuce and cheese BY HAND. All by myself. :) Oh, the horror! Rice. Water. Seasonings. A can of drained beans mixed in when the rice was done. I'm stuffed!

It cost me all of $2 to feed the two of us...with leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Yeesh!

Livin' at the Poverty Line and managing quite well, thank you!

"Poverty" in America is currently pegged at $9,800.00 per single person and $18K for a married couple with 2 kids.

La Raza raked in over 15 million bucks in Federal grants last year. It'd be interesting to know how much of that they budgeted for 'feeding the poor'.

I think that this is determined by survey, with questions like

"At any time in the last year, did you ever worry that you were going to get enough food for a particular day?"

Then they ask kids in school at 11:30.

They fer sure do not get grocery reciepts or follow people around or in-home interviews.

It's a fake survey used to get us to accept higher government spending for special groups so that we'll all be equal like the Constitution mandates /s

easy!

I'm hungry everyday from 1130 to lunch hour and from 500 to dinnertime. Sometimes I'm even hungry other times.

Therefore, I'm hungry everyday! Sometimes I even have to skip a meal because I'm too busy at work. And I feel there's no way out of this horrible situation, what can I possibly do? I'm trapped! I need your assistance so I can get my free lunch!

Now, If only one in five mexican americans goes hungry...that means that 4 out of five EAT ALL DAY LONG!

Does it have have the tartar?

That stuff is nasty. It's made from ground up rats and if you don't believe that just spell tartar backwards.
