The second one looks like a serious piece but it still is going to be a very short range tool.
I agree and yet it comes with scope mounts!
They also have some single shot types http://www.davidsonsinc.com/consumers/subsites/inven_product.asp?dealer_id=62832&item=SCP60000&instock=all&manufact_combo=None&mod_ser_combo=None&category_combo=None&model=None&g_type=None&act_type=&finish_type=None&calib_combo=45LC%7C410+Gauge&sight_class_combo=None&price_range=None&left_handed=&youth=&Offset_rec=0&num_rec=50&item_num=
I just found my snake-eyes here http://www.righteouswarriortemple.org/New%20Folder/derrin.htm in the 7th paragraph but no pic. It does call it a derringer.
Is yours a SxS or an over under? Here is a link to some O/U types http://www.bondarms.com/ifirearms.htm
This seems to a part of the popular self defense advice ethos these days. I disagree. I find that under the extreme pressure of self defense situations there is more of a tendency for the novice shooter to short stroke the pump thus causing a double feed jam. Such a jam is one of the most difficult to clear and could put your life in jeopardy because you're vulnerable unless you instantly discard the longarm and segue to the sidearm.
I'm only speaking from the point of view of having a degree in Criminal Justice, being a former LEO and a current NRA certified Firearms Instructor for the past 20 years. But it's just my .02. Remember...I said novice shooters or those who don't regularly practice with their guns for such a scenario.
Hard to miss? PUH-lease! The shot won't have time to spread at all at typical defense ranges. You most certainly DO have to aim and you can certainly MISS, even with an open choke! This one is Urban Myth.
Semi autos are more reliable today, faster and still offer that satisfying KA-thunk! sound on chambering a round. My Benelli can empty an 8rd tube before the first hull hits the ground and can do so with minimum recoil (the whole bolt group since it is moving, acts as a shock absorber) and maximum accuracy.
Sen. Specter will be pleased by your reference to Scottish law!
Note: Never rely on advice from street cops about guns! Not unless they're the firearms coach for their dept or they've got at least 10yrs experience on an urban SWAT team. OR if they're recent infantry combat veterans.
Cops are victims of our public schools and their antigun agenda. Most street cops are terrible shots and the scoring systems for dept quals is PASS/FAIL for a reason. A lot of attorneys would love to make the argument in court that the cop is liable for shooting his "innocent" client because the cop in question BARELY passed the shooting portion of the police academy. Hence the change in most urban depts.
I agree with you. That is why when talking to a NOVICE and aswering "THE QUESTION" (home defense) I always suggest a good revolver and if they want a shotgun I say get a SBS.
At the very least you will have to buy a new picture window, big screen tv or computer monitor if you miss.
As for an opinion as to weapon choice from freepers, and you shall receive.
Moss. 500 or Rem 870 are great choices. Both have more toys and barrel options than you'd ever want. My advice is about your AMMO. 00 or 000 buck is over kill for indoors and all but outdoor shots at ranges or through cover (car doors, etc.). #5-7.5 shot is just fine at 'pistol' range indoors and just out--especially if in an RV park w/ neighbors near. 000 is what you keep in the saddle holder or if bears might be an issue.
I bet with little restriction you could travel into CANADA provided the thing was cased and unloaded (firearms for self defense are a no-no there, so plan on talking about trap or sheet shooting when asked).
Truth be told, I short stroked my mos 500 on shot #2 when I went deer hunting this year. I surprised myself.
Would a semi-auto combat shotgun meet Fnord's needs in legal terms? I honestly don't know. Some locals want a gun to meet their 'sporting' test.
Side By Side. There you go. Take it a step further. I have an old fashioned sbs "rabbit eared" hammer gun in a special bracket above the bedroom door. Always has two in the pipes and easily and instantly recognizeable for being cocked or not. Problem is that if you need to reload, it's slow...especially under pressure. But then you could always transition to the sidearm in the unlikely event that anybody stuck around after having a Street Howitzer discharged in their direction.
Good question. My guess is that sporting test usually refers to capacity. The ugly black assault shottie (the SPAS was a classic example) usually has an 8+ round capacity in an extended tube. I'll bet a Benelli Black Eagle with a 20" Deer Tube & rifle sights with a factory plug still inside to make it "hunt legal" would keep it legal for SD almost anywhere. The added plus is that simple removal of the plug gives usually an additional 2rd extension so from 3 to 5 rds and that should be enough.
Ammo is also a consideration. Stay with #4 Buckshot and maybe a lighter small game load like #9 shot. Stay AWAY from "exotic defense ammo" like Dragon's Breath, strung buck or fleschettes!
Was the target at point blank range? What does a shotgun have to do with missing at point blank range? For close quarters, I'll take a pistol over a shotgun ant day.
Why would you want a long gun for close quarter use? The average length of a shotgun is 43" The average length of a pistol is 12" Five rounds in a scatter gun, 15 rounds in a pistol. Better target acquisition/reacquisition with a pistol.
I have four shotguns and eight pistols. Pmly the pistols are loaded for home defense and carry. The shotguns are for trap, skeet, sporting clays, and hunting.
Just my 2 cents
Surrounding Newburg is quite rural. It's about 50 miles north of NYC on the west side of the Huson River. I used to go pheasant hunting about 8 miles out. Shotguns are not an issue.
