I grew up in a household where the motto was "anybody but Notre Dame". My dad played trombone in the Northwestern Univ. marching band in the 1940's (now he is classified as a NUMB Alum - Northwestern Univ. Marching Band Alum - get it? ;-). He always roots for any Big 10 team in the Rose Bowl. I ended up going to U of Ill, and my dad and mom were thrilled to make use of the comp tickets to all the football games given to the Marching Illini members (2 comp tickets per member). He'd root for Illinois against whomever they were playing (esp. against Michigan or Ohio State ;-), but would, of course, cheer for Northwestern and sing "Go U Northwestern" whenever they'd score! :-)

Saw him live in the late 70s in my hometown in Michigan. No theatrics like many bands of the era, leaping across the stage, with the mirror balls and laser light shows, special lighting and stage props. Just a good band that went out there and played music for you. A self-described troubadour.

He will always be remembered for The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Still a heartbreaking story to many of us old-timers from that region. Summertime Dream.

if you have a chance pick up some of his albums....and listen to the words.... Try "Minstral of the Dawn"

That was an awesome album. My favourites were Summer Side of Life, Sundown and Summertime Dream.

Lightfoot's music has been a part of my life for a LONG time. My uncle discovered him playing a bar on Spadina and was his manager until 1981.

"Sundown" is a great song.
