Lightfoot has lost some of the rich baritone voice he became so famous for. While he may not be on his farewell tour, we won't have many more opportunities to see him.
He is such a gifted talent. I can't begin to select my favorite song from him. It's so much easier to pick out the few I don't care for.
He credits his time spent in the barbershop quartets as giving him the work/practice ethic needed to be successful in the music business.
Good post. I usually cringe when I hear performers express an opinion. Most of them have the IQ of a turnip and are much less well informed.
But, Gordon's not a performer - he's a poet bard. Glad to hear he's healthy and still making beautiful music.
If you do that, please ping me to it. I'm going to be watching college football later, and I do not want to have you post that without me noticing.
I have yard work to do, but will promise to do that later. You will be the designated "ping-ee". :-)
Lemme guess..... Michigan vs. Ohio State?
I would include Harry Chapin and Jim Croce in any such list. It was a real loss that their time was cut so short.
..And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters..
Great song. Thanks for the post.
Oh, are they playing today? ;-)
I always liked Gordon Lightfoot.
I was about to make exactly the same point and illustrate it with "Summer Side of Life."
Gordon Lightfoot is the only musician I have ever paid money to watch in concert. Very "old school" performance. Some musicians on sitting on stools with a lot of guitars and sound equipment around them - that's all. But that was what we wanted.
He has struggled with his health and was close to death a few years ago. His musical talents are not what they once were but, at his age, that can be forgiven.
He wrote some anit-Vietnam songs in his youth (even got "banned" in Detroit for one of them) so I am glad to read he is supporting Canada's soldiers now.
"Early Morning Rain" always gets me.
Being a former Marching Illini member, this is the same I would have said :-), except for the Bo Schembechler remembrance at today's game. That will be worth watching. He was a great coach and even better man and leader.
Yes he was.
I went to USC, and the way things are lining up right now, I want either OSU or Michigan to lose, which will happen starting about 10 minutes from now.
However, USC has to win three more games after this, so the odds aren't in my favor.
But a tip of the hat to Bo. While I didn't cheer on his teams, I could recognize a job well done.
Go Gordy! I have LOVED his music for decades, there is no voice like his!!!
Gordon Lightfoot Bump!
Listen here ... the Canteen often features a tune or two by Lightfoot, and just posted one:

Thank you! One of the best songs of all time.
The nation that gave us Neil Young and Robertson Davies deserves better than that foolish, ignorant dingbat.
