Google: Veterans Day 'too solemn' for logo (Bologna Alert)
WorldNetDaily ^ | November 14, 2006

Posted on 11/14/2006 7:26:16 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

In response to e-mail generated by a WND story noting Google didn't mark Veterans Day for an eighth straight year, the search engine giant created a form letter explaining the non-commemoration of the holiday was deliberate and out of reverence.

"Thank you for your note," read the form response. "We understand your concern and interest in seeing a Veteran's (sic) Day Google logo. If we were to commemorate this holiday, we'd want to express reverence; however, as Google's special logos tend to be lighthearted in nature, this would be a particularly challenging design. We wouldn't want to create a graphic that could be interpreted as disrespectful in any way."

Despite the claim, Google for Canada honored Remembrance Day, the Canadian version of the U.S. Veterans Day last Saturday with a stylized logo featuring three poppies.

Poppies became associated with Remembrance Day because of the poem written by Canadian physician and Lt. Col. John McCrae in 1915, "In Flanders Fields."

It begins:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

I don't and won't use Google.
My search engine of choice, Dogpile, had a cute graphic of "Arfie", their mascot, parade-marching in patriotic style with a waving flag.

Sisku, I saw your tag. Where in PA? I grew up in Finleyville (Western side). I left for USMC, returned for Pitt, left and never returned. I still like to visit at times.

I use Google Mail, but complained about their lack of reconigition for the Vets. I received this from them. Total BS...

Thank you for your note, we sincerely appreciate feedback from our users
and investors. We understand your interest in seeing a Veterans Day Google
logo. We have a long list of holidays that we'd like to celebrate in the
future. We have to balance this rotating calendar with the need to
maintain the consistency of the Google homepage. We really appreciate your
feedback regarding the Google logo, and please be assured that we're
actively pursuing ways in which we can acknowledge Veterans Day and other
such occasions in the future.

Sincerely,

Investor Relations
Google, Inc.

I really don't know which is worse: completely ignoring Veteran's Day or the cheap commercialization of our national holidays.
I saw an add for shoe sales...The Annual Veteran's Day Shoe Sale.

I could go on about the President's Day White Sale or the 4th of July Electronics Blowout.

Because everyone knows that the sacrifices of our men at Valley Forge mean Flat Screen TV's Half-Price (sarcasm)

Something tells me that they won't be logo-less
come a time that National Gay Pride Day is
enacted. In fact Mother's and Father's Days will
have to be banned for being discriminatingly unobtainable
if Gay marriage and adoption don't go through
into law....JJ61

For those of you not located on the Left Coast, Google is based in Santa Monica, otherwise fondly referred to as The People's Republic of Santa Monica. And for good reason.

John Belushi cough

It's the old, "any lie in a storm" gambit. They hate the US military, and will not honor them. I'm sure their Chinese overlords treat them much better than the US does.

Agreed!

All veterans are recognized on that day, not just those who have died.

I'm on the east side in Amish country. But I have family in Fayette county.

That email is a big load of road apples, as we say around these parts. We should mail the Google corporate office a package of balogna as a fitting rebuttal to their insensitive BALONEY.
