You know, I haven't watched election night coverage for thirty years. Tonight I watched two pf my three favorite shows, which happen to be on Tuesday nights, and then went to sleep at 9PM.

Go to sleep. The news will still be bad tomorrow. So you won't miss anything.

And in 2008 do what I do on election night. Go to sleep. Whatever happens will still have happened in the morning.

I agree with you; but Bush couldn't get a new Sec-Def past the Senate now so I guess its Rummy till the end.

What kind of plane? I student flew a Cherokee back in the 70s around Charleston, S.C., got all the way up to my cross-country; then when practicing stalls one day, the cross winds picked up at the Johns Island airport I wanted to set down in...did eight go-arounds, trying to crab it in and was literally trembling when I finally touched down. Haven't been back up since then, but I'm getting the itch again.

Anyone who thinks we need more boots on the ground really needs to read Tommy Franks "American Soldier". According to Franks, Bush and Rummy let the commanders do their job, with the resources that they asked for. Given the way Franks rights, I am most sure that if the CENTCOM commander had asked for more troops, they would have been delivered.

I for one find refreshing that Bush and Rummy are willing to let the Generals fight the war, and not try to fight themselves while sitting in Washington (LBJ/RNM).

Oh yeah, this Tommy Franks: Page 6 of Woodward's Plan of Attack:

Pressing for more power, Rumsfeld micromanages Iraq war plans. Gen. Tommy Franks tells him (according to insider accounts), "This ain't going to work. You can fire me. I'm either the commander or I'm not...

...Page 281: On Douglas Feith, the Pentagon's undersecretary for policy: "I have to deal with the f--king stupidest guy on the face of the earth almost every day." (Feith, incidentally is handpicked by Rumsfeld)

The bitter irony: The "insurgency" in Iraq will be winding down soon.

With no Saddam, the Baathist wing can either look forward to the current governmental structure or the al qaeda chaos. Many won't want the latter. The coalition will be the only game in town.

Just how were those extra troop supposed to stop something that happened before they would have been there?

How easy it is to forget. How about the extensive "No fly Zones" we had LONG established? There is no way in pergatory weapons left Iraq unnoticed. No way! Blackbird.

It's too bad we didn't take Saddam out while he was in his spider hole. Or... too bad he hasn't been executed. His death would have brought a real measure of closure/progress to most voters, as far as the Iraq war is concerned.

You're forgetting that Rumsfield won two wars quicker than anyone thought possible.

Other than that missing fact, you information and conclusions... well they still suck.

Pardon me if I don't join your celebration.

I'm not "celebrating" as you put it...I've JUST always felt Rumsfeld was way over his head as a wartime SECDEF and, like McNamara before him, just could not rise to the occasion...HOWEVER as a previous poster pointed out, Rumsfeld did good job in rebuilding the military handed to him by the Clintons and he did a pretty good job preparing it to enter the 21st Century when he was Ford's choice way back in the 70s. But, I think you'll admit if you really search the logic God gave you he was a lightening rod for everything that went wrong in Iraq...and things such as autopenned letters of condolences to loved ones of the one or two fallen soldiers each day, when hand-written ones are called for, didn't exactly endear him to the public. Neither did the "go to war with the Army you have" comment to a soldier concerned about vehicle armor to protect himself and his buddies in the midst of IEDs exploding around the battlefield!

Cheney and Bush are huge lightning rods.

It would be best if they step down too.

Rumsfeld should — and will — stay right where he is.

Care to reconsider your remarks?

Did I miss something? Cheney and Bush were ELECTED by the people of this country...your loyalty for Rummy is admirable, but try to walk a mile in the president's shoes and realize that Rummy was radioactive!

And Rumsfeld was appointed by the president "ELECTED by the people of this country."

I'm just taking your advice to "search the logic God gave you." Rumsfeld=lightning rod; lightning rods= must go; Bush/Cheney=lightning rods; therefore..
