The girders aren't true, are they? Some segments veer outward for several stories.
It's under construction.
Edifice complex...
Put them together, they could build a multi-kilometer electric launch tower that's powered by a nuclear power plant at its base.
Dubai is a beautiful city based on pictures I have seen. They are planning for a post-oil world, and are becoming a tourism and commercial center for the Middle East. I'd like to visit there sometime.
"They can get overtime if they like," Sang said.
Now, repeat slowly: "it is not a phallic symbol".... "it is not a phallic symbol"...
if I counted correctly, then almost 100 stories will be constructed atop that small top footprint? I don't think so.
Perhaps that's part of the design...or a variation of such.
No minaret?
Someday, when the oil runs dry or an alternative becomes practical, the middle east will be peppered with the world's most modern edifices no one wants to visit.
Obviously this is about ego and not function. Petro dollars hard at work.
The construction workers are being paid less than $1/hr? 4 weeks @ 60 hours/week = 240 hours / month. $200 / month / 240 hours = $0.83/hour.
How do they get the crane down when they are done?
Built back the World Trade Centers. At least 20 feet taller than the Dubai building.
A lot of knee-jerkers here (here meaning both FR and America) will be suspect simply because they're Arabs, but most in the UAE are capitalists through and through and, as you said, are looking beyond an oil-based economy. That's why I found the whole Dubai Ports World thing rediculous - an alliance of protectionist "conservative" dimwits who don't understand economics or international relations and Democrats looking to bash the President in any way they can. I, however, think we will prevail in the WOT and the UAE could become a model for the potential of the rest of the Middle East. I too would like to visit Dubai someday.
they take them apart piece by piece and bring them down
I would bet that they are using concrete because the raw materials are easier to obtain. Steel costs are real high right now.
I can't imagine it will be concrete all the way up. If so, that's going to be one heavy sucker.
They've built an awesome racing facility and tons of golf courses. The Emir is a racing fanatic, so he can't be all bad. The island projects they are working on just offshore are quite impressive as well.
