LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia (AP) -- The trial of an Atlanta-area father accused of circumcising his 2-year-old daughter with scissors is focusing attention on an ancient African practice that experts say is slowly becoming more common in the U.S. as immigrant communities grow.
Khalid Adem, a 30-year-old immigrant from Ethiopia, is charged with aggravated battery and cruelty to children.
Human rights observers said they believe this is the first criminal case in the U.S. involving the 5,000-year-old practice.
Prosecutors say Adem used scissors to remove his daughter's clitoris in their apartment in 2001. The child's mother said she did not discover it until more than a year later.
"He said he wanted to preserve her virginity," Fortunate Adem, the girl's mother, testified this week. "He said it was the will of God. I became angry in my mind. I thought he was crazy."
The girl, now 7, also testified, clutching a teddy bear and saying that her father "cut me on my private part." Adem cried loudly as his daughter left the courtroom.

My husband was watching our local (Atlanta) news yesterday and I walked in when this story was on. He asked me 'How on earth do you circumsize a girl?" I told him. He almost threw and/or cried at the same time.

How quickly Western society forgets...Wasn't there a case in Florida of a mother (Somali or Ethiopian, I think) who did the same thing to her daughter? She was charged and convicted and sentenced to 2 years, AFAIK. Later on, the same judge (in an obvious fit of PC) let off an Arab woman (from SA) who was charged with molestation of her son. It is, common practice for Arab mothers to "soothe" a crying male infant by fondling his genitals. This was also in Florida.

Exactly. For most practicing Muslims (not including the "moderate" Muslims) the relationship between male and female is one of dominance and submission. Sex is not a mutual act of commitment and pleasure, its a domination of the male over the female. I read an article in the Readers Digest many years ago about a black lady from Somalia (she's a supermodel now-can't remember her name) who survived circumcision. Very compelling story.
Why should immigrants assimilate into our culture? Because it's the BEST CULTURE IN THE WORLD. Other cultures are not equally valuable. Ours is fair, sane, and moral. Most others are not.

The more I think about this story, I have two little girls 3 and 18 months, the more it smells to high heaven.
There is no way the mother didn't know. Was the two year old potty trained, so completely the mother never assited? Not even diapers at night? Did the little girl never bathe? Was she not in pain afterwords, was the mother not the least bit curious? Was there no blood, no bandages?

People try to brush off the severity of this crime by comparing it to male circumcision. There can be benefits to male curcumcision, there are no benefits for women.
Depending on what's been done, removed or sewn up, women can die during their period, from toxic shock syndrome. It's amazingly evil.

CNN was afraid to say "Muslim" and point out all the Christian women who were forcibly circumcised by barbaric Muslim animals during the Timor uprising, just as they are still afraid to point out this forced circumcision in other places where MUSLIM uprizings are slaughtering Christians, Hindu's Buddhists, Monks and converting their new slave women into circumcised Muslims with dull kitchen knives.
