Poor child. Trotted out like this so soon after her father's death. Scandalous.

You don't think she wanted to go? My kids would give their right arms to get there!

What is wrong with you?

She was going to attend this event with her dad. She instead went and presented the award in his place. What an honor for her!

Should she just stay in her house moping about her misfortune? I'm sure Steve Irwin, as full of life as he was, would not want his family to seclude themselves from what was and still is their very public life.

It's good for the living to keep on living, even in the face of personal loss.

Maybe her mother perceived it as a pleasant distraction for her. My father died suddenly when I was nine and, although it must have been hard for her, my mother tried to keep things fairly bright and upbeat for me.

Would you prefer her to sit at home and weep for her father.
There is something I have noticed about children over the yrs. God has blessed them with a short memory span. They go from one subject matter to another in a short time.

When I use to discipline my children, with-en an hour they would be around my neck loving me.

I have also observed in grown ups when there is a death close to them, the ones who get over it the fastest are the ones who get and get busy doing something to occupy their minds.

I am sure Bindis mother knows what is best for her child.

Maybe she should live in a cave until you decide it's time for her to come out?

Here is the story:

Bindi's Choice: honour her DadBy Holly Byrnes

TWO months ago, it was booked to be a fun night out for a loving father and his bubbly young daughter.

But tonight, Bindi Irwin will bravely honour a commitment made by her late dad Steve, which he had planned as a treat for his treasured child.

The eight-year-old and her mother Terri will make the emotional journey to Sydney for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, where they will present the night's top prize.

Steve Irwin agreed to attend the fun awards night so his daughter could meet her favourite TV and pop stars.

But following his tragic death last month, after a stingray attack, the Irwins agreed to honour the commitment - and the Crocodile Hunter in the process.

"(Bindi) was so excited to be going to Sydney for the awards with her daddy," said the family's manager John Stainton yesterday.

"When tragedy struck and the dust settled, I asked Terri if she'd consider doing it in Steve's honour and they both agreed."

Stainton said the international wildlife star would never have agreed to fly to Sydney if not "for Bindi's sake"."It was going to be an amazing night for them both. But now they'll go in honour of him," he said.

It is the family's first public appearance since the tearful memorial at Australia Zoo, where Bindi spoke of her "hero" father and commitment to living his dreams.

Bindi and her mother will walk the red carpet, alongside guest stars such as Ian Thorpe, Guy Sebastian and Anthony Callea.

The Irwins' young son Bob is expected to stay with family in Queensland while his mother and sister fly to Sydney this morning.

The awards, to be hosted by pop star Sophie Monk, is hugely popular with kids, who vote for their favourite celebs in TV, music and sport.

If you saw Terri's interview you would know that it was very important for Terri to keeps Steve's sense of of "fun". Terii wants to keep some fun in her children's lives.

Terri and Bindi after a messy night at the party - tell me that little girl didn't have fun.

When my dad died I was 21. Not a little child. But, the feeling isn't so different. I know as long as I was busy I was fine. The day the telephone stopped ringing because everyone else was moving on. That's when it got hard.

One of the things that experts in child development state about children and trauma is to try and maintain as "normal" a schedule and routine as is possible. To the Irwins, who were always surrounded by media and thousands of people, doing things such as this *is* their normal.

I'd say that probably the second most important thing regarding children who've experienced a death is to allow them the opportunities to share their happiest memories as often as possible. Speaking about their deceased loved one is therapeutic and so important. Even for adults.

Bindi is probably going to surpass Lady Di as one of the most recognized people in the world. You can see it oozing from Bindi; how much she loves the stage and how she will forever love speaking of her beloved daddy.

Try and view the Irwins and especially Bindi from this perspective.

Agreed. She should leave the zoo environment that she's called home for her entire young life and hide from the public until she's emotionally ready to deal with reality again... when she's 35.

Nonsense, the kid has been doing that for a while, was getting ready for her own show before her dad's death and seems to like this stuff.

Good for the family to help move on and it isn't hard labor by any definition.

This child has been taught from birth about death and that life goes on. Her dad taught her well. I applaude Terry for carrying on and honoring him the way she and the children are.

Should they stay in a hole and cry the rest of their lives?

Nana

For most children, you would probably be right on the money. Bindi, though, is her father's daughter, through and through. And she has a purpose to her life that, so far, she doesn't seem to mind inheriting.

I hesitated before I quoted what you said. I pray that child never reads words such as yours. Who are you to accuse her of being "trotted out", and say that this is "scandalous"? No offense intended, but in my honest opinion, your comments are totally uncalled for and cruel.

I agree...they're talking about her taking on his legacy..IT'S ABSURD. She's 8 years old. She really doesn't understand everything.
