SCIENTISTS are poised to press ahead with controversial plans to create hybrid human and rabbit embryos.
It emerged yesterday that three British teams - including one led by Professor Ian Wilmut at Edinburgh University - are due this month to seek licences from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority allowing them to create embryos that are 99.9 per cent human and 0.1 per cent rabbit.
The scientists are also looking at the possibility of creating similar "chimera" embryos by mixing human and cow genes. The aim is to find a ready source of "human" embryonic stem cells without the ethical problems of tampering with human life.
Making the chimeras would involve removing the nuclei from animal eggs and replacing them with genetic material taken from human cells.
The embryos would be mostly human, but would contain animal genes as there are genes outside the nucleus that sit within tiny rod-like powerplants in the cell called mitochondria. These structures, which supply energy, would remain in the animal eggs after the nuclear transfer of human DNA.
Professor Stephen Minger, of King's College London, who leads one of the groups, wants to use stem cells extracted from the embryos to investigate human neurological diseases.
"The idea is to gain information that we can't get from animal models," he said."We want to create tools we can use in academic and pharmaceutical research. We want to create disease-specific cell lines - predominantly neurological disorders with a known genetic basis, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. It could lead to new therapies."
The team being led by Prof Wilmut is also looking at neurological conditions.
While at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Prof Wilmut was in charge of the research that produced Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell.

There are two such eruptions of fallen angels taught in Gen. 6:4: There were giants in the earth in those days (before the flood); and also after that (after the flood), when the sons of God (fallen angels) came in unto the daughters of men (any daughters of men -- Cain, Seth and others), and they bare children to them (to the angels).

The main object of the flood was to do away with all this satanic corruption, destroy the giants, and preserve the pure Adamite stock to as to make good the guarantee of the coming of the seed of the woman, as in the plan of God.

This sounds like the cells are not from human embryos. The genetic material could be from umbilical cord or adult stem cells. For all of those here who support adult stem cell research, would you support this research since no human embryo is destroyed?

This is *not* a Gods, Graves, Glyphs topic. These chimera topics are diluting the value of the keyword, and have been happening a bit more often (like, once a week) for a month or so. Anyway, just so everyone is aware.

Why is this an abomination? We use animals for many things in life - food and clothing, tissues for surgery, hormones and drugs for medicine. If all we are doing is using the cell walls and mitochondria of a rabbit egg to more easily and more quickly regenerate our own adult stem cells (which we are already capable of doing), what is wrong with that? If your son or daughter could be saved by growing their own stem cells using a single rabbit egg, would you refuse and allow them to die? The next time you eat a chicken egg or any food made from eggs, will you consider that an abomination? Are you going to stop eating animal products because someday you are going to die anyway? How ridiculous.
Eating animals is not the same as making human/animal hybrids. The only thing that's ridiculous is thinking that messing with genetics like that is OK. There are other ways of treating disease that does not corrupt or pollute the human race like that. It's a Pandora's Box.

They are not "making" human/animals. They are growing adult human stem cells in tissue culture by using the shell of a single rabbit cell to trigger the process. That shell of a rabbit cell has no genetic code of its own, but it has the biochemical processing plant that can replicate human DNA in a natural way. The grown stem cells then get injected into the body and the body tells the cell what tissue to become. Remember when Don Ho had stem cells injected into his heart and they grew and replaced damaged heart tissue? Those cells were all processed in a lab. This technique is simply another way to grow and process human stem cells more efficiently.
Why are they called embryos?
