Kennedy up for re-election, even if campaign is not apparent By Associated Press Friday, September 29, 2006 - Updated: 03:07 PM EST

BOSTON - An old saying in politics is that a week is a lifetime. That must make 12 years an eon.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is up for re-election this fall, but if you didn’t see his name atop the Democratic ballot on Primary Day, there’d be a good chance you wouldn’t know it.

Less than six weeks from Election Day, one of strongest, most capable election machines in American political history has yet to kick out a TV commercial.

Only Friday did the man whose brother made televised debates a fixture in modern politics agree to a debate. One half-hour. On cable. At a time and date to be determined.

Good luck, too, trying to find a Kennedy campaign sign on Bowdoin Street, the Beacon Hill address John F. Kennedy still claimed when he was elected president in 1960. The same in the North End, the Boston neighborhood from which the Kennedy political dynasty emanated.

All that contrasts with 12 years ago, when the senator was engaged in the proverbial “fight of his political life” against a Republican upstart, Mitt Romney. Their 1994 race was the talk of not only the state, but the nation. The two candidates squared off on the grand stage of Faneuil Hall.

The lack of a high-profile battle for one of the crown jewels in elective office speaks to two well-documented and important phenomenon: the power of incumbency, and the relative weakness of the Republican Party in the state.

The question is whether either is good for Massachusetts.

“I think it means it’s a dysfunctional political state. We’ve lost our equilibrium,” said Peter Blute, a former Republican member of the Legislature and Congress who now hosts a radio show on Worcester’s WCRN-AM.

Kennedy staffers say the Republican Party is to blame for failing to present them with a challenger equivalent to Romney, now the state’s Republican governor and a potential candidate for president in 2008. "......

not much coverage of this event...and it will only be on local cable!

I assume FNC and YouTube will get some good bites...and there should be a video copy on NECN,

I have a feeling that the Massachusetts voters will continue electing Teddy to the Senate even after he's dead.

I'd have insisted that it take place after Happy Hour.

Ken Chase's official web page says that this would be the first of many debates between the two of them. I don't know what Chase is trying to do by saying that since only one debate is scheduled. Chase wants 11 debates done as if that would ever really happen.

SOMEBODY has to ask him publically before the SOB dies.

BTW, 30 minutes for a debate? That's a joke..

Why have a debate at all? Massachusetts would elect Kennedy if they had a video of him fornicating with an 11 year old boy. Hell he drowned a woman and that didnt bother them. he watched his cousin rape a woman in Florida, that didn bother them. He made his wife a drunk and then annulled the marriage and married a cutie pie. that didnt bother them. He makes an ass of hiomself every time he opens his mouth . That doesnt bother them.
They love this drunken obese POS.

Thirty minues!!! That is not even long enough for the moderator to ask one question and Kennedy to finish his opening ahs, and ehs.

Ridiculous. Bu then again from his televised committee work it is obvious that The Swimmer falls asleep after 30 minues of just about anything.

Local cable.

Too bad. This should be nationwide, prime time, all channel coverage, pre-empting EVERYTHING. America should see the absolutely dissolute miserable excuse of a Senator that Massachuetts has been sending to represent them for the past 44 years (darned near as long as that other KKK member, Robert Byrd).

I would have thought Teddy would have succumbed to some organ failure by now, because he has spent most of the past half a century getting fat, drunk and stupid, which is NO way to go through life.

I don't even know why he would agree to any debate. He is so far ahead in the polls that he does not need to debate. The Republican I guess is just trying to get some face time on TV. I applaud his courage to enter this race, but he must have know it was a loser when he went in.

The People of Massachusetts cant seem to get over this Kennedy American Royalty crap.
Tie that in with the pork he brings home and they are bought and paid for. Its really disgusting.

I have met people in my travels that are from Massachusetts. I ask them and none will admit they vote for Kennedy. Yet he gets elected.

Kennedy offering to debate for 1/2 an hour is an insult to his opponent and the people of Massachusetts.

Its an insult no more no less.

Its an insult to the intelligence of anyone concerned to think anything can be debated in 30 minutes.

Why you ignorant peasant! Who cares what you think?

Don't you know that the violent racist majority must have its base impulses reined in by an Aristocracy of Conscience, and its young reeducated to accept the new compassionate order?

Why, I'll bet you probably own guns. We're coming for those, too.

Are those recent pictures of Kennedy because he looks thinner or worse in his face?

Both

Fatboy is worse in the face because other photos usually show him younger (tipping point) and even recent pics on TV or in campaign appearances he is heavily made up

Hillary usually is more heavily made up and has her neck covered up - unlike in this photo of both of them

I'd say by now Kennedy's liver is pretty much shot
