Caught part of a Webb TV ad today about "protecting" the children. I gathered he is using the Foley news now. Hope Allen wipes him out by 10 or more points.

"ATTENTION HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP:

George Allen's strategic turnaround represents a model that House Republicans may want to follow in light of the Foley debacle."

Clinton special counsel Lanny Davis said basically the same on NPR this morning. No matter what you think of Davis I think he was right on. Basically, he said, Hastert has done exactly the opposite of what he should have done ever since he learned something might have happened. The way he's handled it has ensured that it's staying in the headlines. Allen handled his situation perfectly. I know many Freepers didn't like hearing him apologize or even suggest he did anything wrong, but that was key to moving on.

There's a recording of the Davis interview on the Morning Edition website. BTW, Davis says he feels there's absolutely no reason for Hastert to resign.

I agree with you. Live by the polls, die by the polls.

A lot of folks were slamming Zogby and his poll when the numbers looked bad for us. Now that they look good Zogby's alright? No.

We've been following Zogby and his special sauce since the '98 elections here on Free Republic. His polls are always less arcurate weeks before the election, and "get" more accurate as we get closer to the 1st Tuesday in November. That is the special sauce.

I never believed Allen was in that much danger anyway. All of the bad polls were just attempts to help the Dems. Now the pollsters will start reflecting on their reputaions, so things will start to look up for the Republicans.

Corin, good report. Looks like the counter-attack is working.

The MSM will use this anyway during the presidential campaign.

Well, yes and no. Of course this is Zogby. But, even with him, this shows the shift in the numbers. Two words.

MO. MENTUM.

That's key because what we've heard for the last month is how Allen has "tanked" because of all the (baseless) charges slung at him. But now we have this, along with the SurveyUSA and Rasmussen numbers that are showing that Allen is still in the lead and that his lead is increasing.

The other thing that all of the polls in this race have shown us is that Webb has been stagnant at 42-44%. Until this one, when his numbers go ~down~.

So, sure, take it all with a grain of salt. But the only way to interpret this is as good news for Allen. We won't quit. We won't slow down. In fact this just inspires us.

Take a trip over to the Virginia blogosphere where the rats are already rearranging the deck chairs.

They've pounded us with lies and smears for weeks now. Let us enjoy the moment.

Again, I just have never believed the pollsters' numbers. Something is wrong. They aren't capturing the cell phones, or whatever, but this season, they just seem all off and to the left by a bunch.

I think whatever you see as the "average" of the pollsters, add 5 to the Pubbie and subtract 5 from the Dem and that's the real number.

I gotta tell you....that performance he had with Webb...when that witch brought up his Jewish heritage is what helped him a LOT.

I was very impressed how he handled it.

But, unfortunately, there are even conservative pundits that wrote him off ....and even critisized how he handled that...too bad, it looks like it worked.

Heh...and on Election Day, even after the polls were closed, they were telling us Kerry was going to take Virginia...

Is that macaca on the front of Webb's suit?

This is great news because campaigning in Alexandria is preaching to the choir. The city is 70% Democratic.

I know some hard-core Alexandria liberals who hate Webb, so they're just not voting. If you can't even pull Alexandria, you're in a bad shape.

Allen's new ads about Webb's treatment of women in the military are good. Webb looks even more like a jerk.

That is an astute observation and I will refer to it often not only in this election cycle but the ones to come.

The Allen ads featuring Navy women were absolutely devastating to Webb. And Webb's counter-ads are too little too late. Kudos to the Allen people for mounting by far the best GOP ad-slam in this cycle.

Obadiah...you got it, man. The Dems will lose....AGAIN...and it's going to be fun watching them commit mass suicide the day after the elections. As James Carville said, "If we can't win in this atmosphere, we really need to question our existence as a party".
