"Every IM program I've ever used allows the option of saving chat logs. They're quite useful if you hate taking notes during a "conversation", but want to go back and reference the "conversation" later, such as getting directions, recipes, etc." The point is: Who would IM with pornographic discussion and save them? Unless it was to use them against the other person?

Foley's homosexuality was known. Could the pages have been contacted by someone to keep track of their IM messages with the congressman? I don't think it takes a tinfoil hat to imagine that happening. There's lots of intrinsic intrigue in DC anyway.

Mine sure doesn't! If I want to save an IM I have with my folks, I have to cut 'n paste to a text file. Manually.

This column could have answered its own questions in ten words or less:
1) it's election time
2) double standard
3) doh!

Here's a really simple question: Who saves Instant Messages? Some of us don't even know how.

Yes. These are political set-ups. It's an election season, and it completely normal for the Democrats to do anything and everything to win.

Exactly! This is a setup from the beginning, dating back several years. Foley is guilty, and did the right thing by stepping down. Those who illegally copied his emails or Instant Messages without his consent should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for illegal wiretapping.

Could the pages have been contacted by someone to keep track of their IM messages with the congressman? I am thinking it may be even more sleezy. Let's say the DEMS get the name of one of the pages involved in the less damaging email contacts from Foley. They convince him to contact Foley again and try to get him to get more "personal". Then they can easily track what is going on in the IM's.
To: DocFarmer
I find it hard to believe that no one has realized that Foley was obviously set up by Allen to take the heat off of himself. Its quite a cunning plan.

Kids do. These pages would certainly have known how to save them.

You can set any of the IM programs to keep an IM log, many businesses require it if IM is used for company matters. Also, I believe that, like emails, they can be had via subpeona of the ISP or whomever maintains the IM systems server (i.e. AOL, Yahoo, etc).

I'm not sure that e-Mails or IMs are covered under wiretapping laws. Also, it is generally accepted that Internet messages of any type are inherently insecure.
That said, the only decent thing Foley did in this was to resign. His "rehab" dodge seems really lib/dem/soc/commie to me (and yes, I use that term both as a description of the so-called "left" and as an insult)...
To: TommyDale
Lots of people do. I have done it to save a conversation I want/need to remember. Our various offices at work use IM as a communications tool, and I often paste information into a document if I need to hang onto it.
The point is that it's very easy to do and people should bear that in mind when IM'ing.

I think we all know it can be done. What I am saying is: what would motivate ANYONE to save such IMs (pornographic or incriminating) unless they had a specific agenda?
I think we all know the answer.

In other news, Alcoa stocks just went up 2 points :-)

To: Turbo Pig
You're probably right. It's way too cunning of a plan for Allen to dream up. :)
