Canadian Border guards flee their posts

Canadian Border "Guards" Flee Posts After Security Scare That's weird because I thought guards were there specifically in the event there was a security threat. Silly me.

Guards walk off job at four B.C. border crossings

Canadian border guards at four crossings in the Lower Mainland of B.C. have walked off the job in response to a security scare.

CTV Vancouver reported Sunday night that lineups at four crossings into Canada are massive. Gary Barndt reported from the station's helicopter that the lineups appeared to be several kilometres long at one crossing...This was the first time she could recall all four crossings been affected this way.

The situation started in the afternoon when U.S. Homeland Security officials told the RCMP that a suspected killer from California, who should be considered armed and dangerous, might try to cross the Canadian border.

They thought he was heading northward towards Anacortes, Wa.on a motorcycle -- located about 60 kilometres due south of the border, but sharing a ferry route with Sidney, B.C. -- where a motorcycle rally was taking place. Many Canadians attended the Oyster Run, as it's called.

The RCMP informed the border guards, who walked off first at Huntington at 2:15 p.m. , then the other three crossings. About 60 guards are believed to be off the job.

I'm impressed. Perhaps it's time for a wall up north, too

ARE CANADIANS COWARDS ?

Either way, I agree with Tammy Bruce, we should seal off our northern border, we have been to complacent, and our neighbors have been 'do-nothings', for far too long !

At the very least this incident, as well as many others, in trends going back to the Cold War, prove that Canada is unreliable on issues of Border Safety and Security .

Canadians think 'The World is Their Oyster' .

These Liberals only real concern is 'acid rain' or some other politically-correct non-threat .

True and misleading !

he crossed over from Vancouver to Washington State, and was then apprehended by our Customs Agents, not Canada's - -

they just let him pass thru . . .

They're referring to an incident where there had been an armed robbery in Bellingham, WA...and it was thought that the perps might be headed toward Canada. I can't remember whether they were armed and dangerous or were known to speak angrily...the Canadian border guards all went bye-bye.

In an indirect answer, they (the Canadians) practice strict gun control in their country .

Also, their Border Guards are hamstrung by some of the same regulations as ours, you can't get rough on these trespassers .

These Canackers have been touchy feely about guns ever since way back in 1989 when some Middle Eastern guy, he was of Muslim or Pakistani descent, marched into the Polytechnic Institute of Montreal and shouting "your all a bunch of feminists" executed at least a dozen of the female students ~ ~

Someone else posted about that incident .

Crimanals who have committed a Capitol Offense here in The States, have fled up to Canada in the past ~
remember Charles Ng ?

He, along with Leonard Lake, are responsible for 25 murders of men, women, and one infant, way up in Calaveras County back in the mid 1980's .

Lake committed suicide to avoid capture ~
Charles Ng high-tailed it up to Canada . .

The result is the same. They are really only there to collect the duty on low cost American tobacco and booze.
The security part is left up to the Americans. As it probably should be. If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself.

Canada has forbidden the death penalty, and there is, or was, a treaty with Canada establishing that they did not have to return anyone to the U.S. that was going to be executed .

Canadian border guards are not armed because of government policy. IF you were in their situation, would you want to confront an armed crazy? It's the Canadian gun phobia, not cowardly guards.

This is a re occuring problem. The border guards have been authorized to carry guns (Thank you PM Harper)

Sadly, this will take a few years to phase in.

I went in and back out of Canada last month - and I didn't even think to note if or not they were armed...but I do think I would have noticed had they been...they never checked my bags, and I'm a gray haired old great granny. I thought we were the type to get the thorough once over. :o)

A border guard help stop the millenium bombers, so they'ver partnered with us before in HS.

The border guards that stopped Ahmed Ressam aka "The Millennium Bomber" were American border guards at Port Angeles, WA.

Ressam had crossed into the U.S. on the Victoria, B.C.- Port Angeles, WA ferry and U.S. Customs officer Diana Dean gets the credit for flushing him out.

U.S. Customs officer Diana Dean told the Digest she found the olive-skinned Canadian who identified himself as "Benni Norris" unusually nervous. The ferry from Vancouver had just chugged up to its slip at Port Angeles, Washington on the afternoon of December 14, 1999, and Norris lowered the window of his Chrysler 300. Despite the chilly air, he was sweating, Dean noticed. When she asked him to open his trunk, he bolted. After a brief chase, "Norris"/Ressam was arrested. In the trunk, they found 130 pounds of plastic explosives, two 22 ounce plastic bottles full of nitro glycol, and a map of LAX. (The link is incorrect about Vancouver. The ferries at Port Angeles have a Port Angeles-Victoria run.)

The only Canadian role in that case was the fact that Canada had made Ahmed Ressam a landed immigrant of Canada.

Canada has never armed the Customs & Immigration officials stationed on the U.S. border.

It's always been an UNDEFENDED border.

Judging by the comments of some on this thread, you'd think we should be setting tank-traps by the Peace Arch.

In any event, these government employees will be armed soon enough. I, for one, do not see this as a security improvement - just posturing, imho.

Canadian Border Guards used to be armed. But in the early liberal years ( The 70s I think) The trudeau government disarmed them ( Think Liberal, think inviting the friendly masses from abroad, think kindness and invitation, no GUNS!)

Now when tgere is a seurity threat, the RCMP are supposed to support the Border Patrol. However, these days they are too busy marrying each other, in dress uniform to bother with supporting the border patrol.

Canada is in a fix, caused by 40 years of liberal hoo haw , and now we see just where we would be if Harper had not been elected.

The Canadian Border patrol are not a po9lice force, they are uniformed civil servants who are untrained in security, but are trained to keep out foreign vegetables and meat products, and are trained to welcome ALL from abroad. No border patrol officer is expected to put their life at risk, the dangerous work is supposed to be RCMP work. Its a UNION thing.

Harper will fix this but it will take a time we do not have.
