A notorious Muslim extremist told a demonstration in London yesterday that the Pope should face execution.
Anjem Choudary said those who insulted Islam would be "subject to capital punishment".
His remarks came during a protest outside Westminster Cathedral on a day that worldwide anger among Muslim hardliners towards Pope Benedict XVI appeared to deepen.
The pontiff yesterday apologised for causing offence during a lecture last week. Quoting a medieval emperor, his words were taken to mean that he called the prophet Mohammed "evil and inhuman".
He insisted he was "deeply sorry" but his humbling words did not go far enough to silence all his critics or quell the violence and anger he has triggered.
A nun was shot dead in Somalia by Islamic gunmen and churches came under attack in Palestine.
Choudary's appeal for the death of Pope Benedict was the second time he has been linked with apparent incitement to murder within a year.
The 39-year-old lawyer organised demonstrations against the publication of cartoons of Mohammed in February in Denmark. Protesters carried placards declaring "Behead Those Who Insult Islam".
Yesterday he said: "The Muslims take their religion very seriously and non-Muslims must appreciate that and that must also understand that there may be serious consequences if you insult Islam and the prophet.
"Whoever insults the message of Mohammed is going to be subject to capital punishment."
He added: "I am here have a peaceful demonstration. But there may be people in Italy or other parts of the world who would carry that out.
"I think that warning needs to be understood by all people who want to insult Islam and want to insult the prophet of Islam."

I'm not a religous person at all. To me, its sadly funny to watch two great religions clash. Both claim to be connected to God (or to speak for him) but, both groups leaders are just full of shit. They are simply men who weild power by convincing people that they weild power.
With that said, Western religion went the through reformation and the age of reason is upon them. Somehow, westerners have found away to intermingle religious doctrin and politics. The Muslims, however, are still stuck in the 'my way or off with your head' mono-theism fascism that us westerners just can't comprehend. In this way, even the most atheist amongst us can't help but side with the west and freedom. The death threats against the Pope are absolutely stupid and cruel. The daily suicide bombings are likewise, stupid. The Muslim world is jealous of our success, our stuff, our homes, our science...our happiness with daily life. Many our angry and hateful people...and quite serious about it (obviously).
Still, it's amazing how ordinary men of both cultures can throw on a fancy robe, look to the sky with a tear in their eye (for effect) and get so many chumps to follow them in the name of God.

The Pope preaches a competitive doctrine that is of a threat to them.
The cultures that have had the influence of a JudeoChristian culture have profited in every arena whilst Muslim cultures are still in the middle ages. Political, Science, medicine, education, human rights, military, arts you name it. Western Civilization stands between them and domination. So its founding doctrine that helped birth this civilization must be eradicated.
Let alone the clash of the spiritual. Islam and Christianity cannot co-exist. At least these demons are smart enough to understand what our liberals will not. My preference is to dilute Islam as Liberals have tried to dilute Christianity. Only in Islam's case liberalizing the doctrine would be to its benefit.
On their part they know Christianity can never really be diluted forever. So they seek to kill it, Christ's followers, those who would rise to their protection and of course as such a recognizable figure for Christianity the Pope is the premier target.
My attitude is that I'm already marked for "capitol punishment" for accepting Christ and daring to demand we fight them. But if they need an excuse to seek my head, I just gave them one above. I don't think Islam should be referred to as religion anymore. It doesn't deserve satus or protection along the same lines as Christianity, Judaism, etc. It's like referring to street gang membership as a religion. Would we refer to the Ku Klux Klan as a "religion"? I keep hearing about the moderate muslims. Where are they? And how can anyone who follows the mentality of Islam be moderate when the teachings of its leader are so violent?
Relatively few Christians "follow" any men as you term it. We follow Christ and we listen to the opinions of Christian leaders - but we don't follow them unconditionally like the muzzies do. We listen, discern, test, discuss, etc. That's not happening in the muzzie world. Don't lump us in with the totalitarians please.
