The very MINUTE I heard about Chi-Chi's, I said "Thank You NAFTA!"

I'm now saying it again!

"Thank You NAFTA!"

Can't see how spinach would get infected otherwise...maybe cow dung?

The porta potty trucks also have a hand washing station.

My late uncle used to haul produce.

The last fifteen years of his life, he avoided lettuce for the reason you mentioned.

BTW - that kudzu thread was a riot - I had missed it.

I can testify that a shockingly large number of good' ol' white Americans fail to wash their hands after using the restrooms which have plentiful soap, hot water, and paper toweling or air dryers. And they return to their work or go to lunch afterwards. Based on casual observations whilst using the facilities myself.

And I have yet to see the porta-potty with handwashing provisions at any jobsite, concert or other event, yet vendors sell food (often not all that far away).

It seems a lot of people either slept through Health class or don't believe the germ theory of illness.

Do you notice the signs in restaraunts that say"workers required to wash hands";I suppose it is a violation to require customers to wash?

The old Chinese practice of shaking one's own hands when meeeting makes more sense in this light. You never know who is going to hand you a load of crap!

I wonder that more people do not succumb to disease through filthy habits.

I have this nagging suspicion that the field workers could give a crap about washing their hands after using the "facilities"...

I am in the vegetable business. Most comes from birds flying overhead. Rarely from humans, and certainly not from cows! Get real!

"The investigators went to were the produce was grown and found out that the water that they sprayed on the fresh produce to keep it fresh was contaminated by a broken sewer pipe ( or a outhouse near the water ) that was near the water source were they got the water to spray the produce."

Interesting. I had an acquaintance who got it from a salad in a restaurant, the 0157. Ate no meat. How? Health inspectors said likely "cross-contamination." Contaminated meat used same cutting surface or knife used on both. In meat it is of little danger because easy to kill with low heat. Salad was eaten raw.

No expert but 0157 is supposed to be the worse. I guess there are other varieties of e. coli originating from humans, I hadn't known that before.

Years ago unpasteurized apple juice was contaminated from a fruit picked from the ground. Just need one bad apple...

Yep.
Maybe 10 years ago, there was some sort of public health convention in
New Orleans.
Some graduate students were made to "lurk" in bathrooms and record the
handwashing rates...of these HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.

It's been long enough ago that I can't remember the exact numbers they recorded.
IIRC, it was just about as bad as for the general public.
Otherwise it wouldn't have made the news.

(what shocked me was that the hand-washing percentage of the ladies was not
much better than the guys)

Don't we all have e-coli in our colon.....? That's why we have toilets.....and ask people to wash their hands.

I know. I grew a bunch of it earlier this year (I'm in the Seattle area)

Ate all I grew, then it got really, really dry for the Seattle area and just wasn't worth trying to keep going.

But we got some rain and I'm tempted to follow your lead and toss a pack or two of seeds in.

Birds? Makes sense. Thanks for the inside information. The site I linked above says the 0157 variety mostly derives from cows, but other animals too. Makes sense to wash veggies well. I do, but suspect users of the packaged, precut veggies less so.
