Hard to say. It is my understanding that this major rift has been in existance since the 7th century. Neither side has ever been able to wipe out the other, and there have been times of fighting, tensions, truces, and live-and-let-live to one degree or another. In some places Sunni and Shia have been living next door to each other for generations and there has been more than a little inter-marriage.
Hard part to discern is whether that was simply to thwart Iran or becuase he sees some opportunity to make progress.

While I agree, in part at least, that the Administration could have handled some aspects of the war differently, I would point out that there are 3 reasons we are hearing more about the Taliban...
1) This summer we have been far more aggreesive than in the past. We are actively hunting the Taliban in large numbers (and ofetn killing them in larger numbers). This has resulted in more contact with them, so we hear more about them.
2) The Taliban wants to get their licks in before winter sets in. Winter weather severely hampers their operations in and near the moutainous regions.
3) They have adopted Iraq-style terror tactics (car bombs, etc...) The media feeds on this, so they report it more.
The idea that the Taliban are producing this increasingly unbeatable force isn't correct. They have been getting their collective a$$e$ handed to them.
Wars are never perfect, far from it - mistakes are always made and opportunities missed. In war, however, the consequences are greater as lives rather than finances etc hang in the balance. Look at what happened in the Bulge - it was a huge screw up on many levels.
What would you propose to do for future (not past - that's too easy) combat ops/tactics etc?

If nothing else comes of these captures and recent raids ...they are getting a better handle on who al Masri is.....they will know what makes him tick..
I'll give you just one reason... We didn't utterly destroy them when we had the chance.

Actually, I believe that the murderers have little if any religious motivation. I think they are "equal opportunity", as long as the target is homogeneous enough to be called sectarian. I think you would find the same killers in both sides of town.

I want someone from our side to ask the liberals why al-Qaeda leaders are in Iraq. Are they there on a vacation? Perhaps they chose Baghdad for their honeymoon? Did they stop their to fill their gas tanks?
