'Steve was my soulmate'

TERRI IRWIN, the widow of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin today spoke for the first time about the loss of her "soulmate" in a freak accident off the north Queensland coast. In a statement read by her father-in-law Bob Irwin today, Mrs Irwin described her late husband as as her "soul mate" and thanked the community for their "overwhelming outpouring of love, support and prayers". Bob Irwin today announced the details of a memorial service for the larger than life conservationist and television personaility.

It will be held at Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast next Wednesday.Irwin, 44, died last Monday when he was pierced in the chest by a stingray's barb while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. His father said the service would be held at 9am (AEST) next Wednesday at the zoo's Crocoseum, which seats 5500 people. People who wanted to attend would have to make a donation to Irwin's Wildlife Warriors fund to gain admission.Large television screens will be set up at venues in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and the event will be broadcast live on TV in Australia, the United States and Asia.

Mrs Irwin said that although larger venues had been suggested, she believed the croc hunter would have wanted it at Australia Zoo.

"I cannot see how a memorial service would work in any other place other than the Crocoseum which he built here at the zoo and of which he was so proud," Mrs Irwin said.

"I would therefore ask that everyone please bear with me in this wish and help me to make this happen."

The croc hunter's close friend and business manager John Stainton said Mrs Irwin, Steve's father Bob and eight-year-old daughter Bindi would all speak at the memorial service.

Damn, something an 8yo should never have to do...

...and eight-year-old daughter Bindi would all speak at the memorial service.

Most ridiculous, but most amazing honor I've heard of a recently deceased person receiving in a long time:

Today's news reports that grieving Aussies are killing sting-rays in rage and sadness.

It's absurd. But that's quite incredible.

yw, AD.

Yeah, the service will be a real tear-jerker, esp w/ Bindi speaking. The 12yo son of a friend of mine died a number of years ago, and I was amazed at the poise and courage of the 2 classmates of his that gave eulogies.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad they've chosen to share this with us, and televise it here in the US. My prayers go out to the family.

I knew Bindi was a cutie--I posted her pictures on a thread not too many days ago, but I saw her talk last night on a show about Steve made in 2004 from Animal Planet. She was probably about 6 at the time. OMGoodness what a little doll she is. I'm so sad for her and Baby Bob and the rest of the Irwin family.

I think Bindi will just do beautifully. She's got a bit of Dad's show biz in her, in a good way. She might be more up to it than Terri is.

This is wonderful news, that it will be at the Zoo. Terri's right, hard to imagine it being anywhere else. Sorry I don't have cable and won't be able to see it here in the US, but I'm sure I will see the best clips afterwards.

Terri and Bindi are so brave to be doing this. I feel so badly for them.
Does anyone know if animal Planet will be airing this or another station?

"Today's news reports that grieving Aussies are killing sting-rays in rage and sadness."

That would be the last thing Steve would've wanted. Shame on them. They completely miss the point.

I thought I read in an article that he was going to be buried at Australia Zoo. I'm still hoping for the island in the middle of the crocodile enclosure.

What time would that service work out to be CDT?

This photo is from the Australia Zoo's website. His kids are impossibly cute, and it's clear how much they loved each other.

There is an amazing little video here of Steve Irwin crying when a crocodile died.

This guy loved his animals!

I dont believe that report, quite frankly. Maybe an isolated incident, but I dont believe its happening as stated here.

US Central is GMT -6, Brisbane is GMT +10, so 16 hr difference between us. Antipodean Standard time vs Daylight has got me confoosed, guess it's 'Spring back, Fall forward' there... :)
