Nancy Reagan Objects to Campaign Ad

Democratic Senate candidate Jim Webb has a television ad ready to air featuring praise from his late boss Ronald Reagan — and Nancy Reagan called on him Friday to cancel it.

Webb, who was Reagan's Navy secretary before Webb switched to the Democratic Party, uses the ultimate GOP icon to send a sentimental message to conservatives and moderates courted by his opponent, Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record). The ad is scheduled to begin airing next week.

But a three-paragraph letter from the former first lady's office said the use of footage of Reagan, who died in 2004, is "neither authorized nor appropriate."

Good for her!

She shouldn't allow her husband to be used to endorse a DEMONCRAT. EVER.

The 30-second ad opens with video of Reagan praising Webb during a commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1985, when Reagan was president and Webb, a Navy grad, was an assistant secretary of defense.

"James' gallantry as a Marine in Vietnam won him the Navy Cross and other decorations," Reagan says on the video.

This is LOW to use this to endorse the ideology of a DEMONCRAT.

If they have a "d" behind their name you can expect them to engage in "low" behavior.

The problem is really that they don't know they are being "stupid". They cannot see the forest because of trees getting in the way.

If Webb really wants to invoke Reagan, Allen should ask Virginians if Reagan liked having a Democratic Senate.

Get a load of this:

His campaign spokeswoman, Kristian Denny Todd, said the ad was fair.

"At this time, we are not changing our plans," Denny Todd said.

This was the response AFTER she sent the letter to them stating NOT to use her husband in this way.

Allen just needs to follow up with an ad showing Reagan saying this line....(paraphrasing) .." It's not so much that the democrats don't know...it's just that so much that they know is wrong"...
(I'm sure someone here has the correct quote - but you get the idea !!!

Someone should ask these dimRAts "What have you done since?"

They seem to think - and much of the public swallows - that if they were in the service and if they were decorated - however frivolously - like Kerry and Murtha - that that alone means they should be in power>

Time for people to examine what they've done in the LAST 30-40 years!

Sorry, but I don't blame the guy here. IMHO, James Webb has the right to use footage of Reagan that relates DIRECTLY TO JAMES WEBB. Reagan was talking about the man personally, and that makes it fair game. If it were a Democrat using footage of Reagan talking about someone else, and twisting it in an underhanded manner, that would be another story. However, Reagan is obviously on record as saying positive things about this individual, and that pretty much sums it up.

Nice comments uttered in 1985 have nothing to do with this guys sleezy attempt to use Ronald Reagan in his underhanded attempt to appear endorsed by a man now dead. This is a sick thing to do. He doesn't have any way to demonstrate that President Reagan would endorse him today. Therefore, He is obligated to not use something to suggest an endorsement of him exists. Sorry, we will not agree on this one.

IMHO it is wrong of any one, Republican or Democrat, to use President Reagan in a political campaign, quite apart from Mrs. Reagan's wishes. If someone is not around to endorse a candidate, that candidate should not attempt to obtain an endorsement by association alone. It is wrong.

Webb has refused to pull the ad. I think this will hurt him more than help him. Virginia is still a "God & Country" Commonwealth and Reagan is still highly esteemed.

By Nancy asking and Webb refusing, yeah; it could hurt him in the long run.

My appologies if I left the impression I thought you meant otherwise. I was just posting a message in furtherance of your own. And, I agree that Senator Allen should not use President Reagan's picture on a website where he is trying to make the same connection to his name as did Webb. Having a picture of the President on his wall in his office would be okay, but not for campaign purposes.

I thank you for your comment regarding my son. He is presently in Baghdad with a unit whose responsibility is to stop the violence in those really bad neighborhoods. I greatly appreciate your best wishes.

I don't think he "turned traitor" when he resigned because he objected to the budget cuts to the Navy.

According to Redstate, Webb did not resign over budget cuts. Here's their account of how he conducted himself when and after he resigned--after holding his post for a mere 10 months.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1698960/posts

Unless this report is completely false, it is hardly appropriate for Webb to now try to invoke Reagan's kind words about him.

RedState posted this as indicted by freespirited in his post. If this doesn't convince you that this man is a sleeze, then I don't know what might.

"In 1988, Jim Webb gave a speech at the National Press Club in which he broke ranks with the Reagan Administration on its very successful policy of dealing with the Soviet Union. While the Reagan administration was pursuing an arms buildup to force the Soviet hand, Webb was out demanding cuts in American military strength in Europe.

Also in 1988, Jim Webb went on record opposing President Reagan's Persian Gulf policy. On April 24, 1988, in the Albany Times Union, Webb wrote an opinion piece highly critical of President Reagan. Webb called the Reagan administration cowardly . . ."

There is a good way to respond ... and really create a hissy-fit by the Demoncrats.

First .... the Democrats take strong umbrage at any Republican quoting a Democrat in a political campaign, so for Nancy Reagan to complain is reasonable, based on the Democrat's past actions.

But, if Webb insists on running the ad with Reagan's praise, then the Republicans should run an ad with a portion of John F. Kennedy's Inaugaral Address -

" Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty. "

Then, fade to various Democrats who propose a "cut and run" philosophy and ask ... " ... after freeing 25 million Iraqi people and giving them a chance to have a free country, the Democrats propose to cut and run. A leading Democrat, Senator John Rockefellor, suggests that the world would be better off if Saddam Hussein was still in power. My friends, the current Democrat party has repudiated John Kennedy - now, they will bear no burden, pay no price, and will not try to ensure the survival of success and liberty. And James Webb will lead the charge of the Democrats to cut and run."

Do that, and see how loud the Democrats scream!!!!

Mike

And he was with the Reagan administration for four years.

But three of them were not as Secretary of the Navy, a post he quit after serving a very short time. Folks have a right to criticize the way he walked out of such a high position in the Reagan Administration after such short service.

Moreover, if you think it is right to invoke the memory of Reagan's praise after calling him cowardly, we will have to agree to disagree.
