Betrayed in the Line of Duty
The New American ^ | William F. Jasper

While the Bush administration seeks amnesty for illegal aliens and grants immunity to a Mexican drug smuggler, it has thrown the book at two courageous Border Patrol agents. Fabens, Texas — The chase was on. The suspected smuggler van turned back toward the Rio Grande and headed for Mexico. Border Patrol agent Ignacio Ramos was on his tail. Other agents were also converging on the scene. The suspect realized he wasn't going to outrun agent Ramos' vehicle, and so he abandoned his van on a levee and took off on foot. As the suspect headed into the canal, Ramos yelled for him to stop but was ignored.

As Ramos crossed the canal, he heard gunshots. Ramos knew he was in an area where the Mexican drug cartels have grown increasingly brazen, and where Mexican police and military units often support the drug smugglers. He didn't know if, when he emerged from the canal, he would be facing an armed suspect, possibly reinforced by heavy firepower.

As he came over the levee, he could see a fellow officer, agent Jose Compean, bloodied and lying in the dirt. Sweating, heart pounding, and adrenaline pumping, Ramos raced by Compean after the smuggler, who was kicking up clouds of dust as he ran. Suddenly, the smuggler stopped and turned toward Ramos and pointed what appeared to be a gun. Agent Ramos raised his pistol and fired one shot, upon which the suspect spun around and continued running for the river. Ramos, with the danger passed, immediately lowered his pistol.

"I shot," Ramos later told reporter Sara A. Carter. "But I didn't think he was hit, because he kept running into the brush and then disappeared into it.

I don't know if you've seen Sara A. Carter, the reporter for a Southern California newspaper. She's been on O'Reilly, H&C and Scarborough.

At great personal risk she has reported on this and other stories regarding illegal immigration.

The President paying absolutely no attention to what 70% of the nation's citizens (and the vast majority of his base) wants is an insult to many of us.

On the issues of immigration and border security, I would he is not supporting us or upholding his oath to enforce the laws of the nation.

I don't care what you think; the owner of this site doesn't want you calling him that name.

You are wrong. I have not seen a single poll were it said it was high on the priority list. Certainly not 70%. If asked, people say it's a problem, but nowhere do 70% say it is THE problem.

Even the vast majority of his base.

I find it absolutely fascinating that every single time the President kicks a little butt...there are people who start yelling IMMIGRATION at the top of their lungs. It's really fascinating.

I didn't realize that FR was a Bush cheer leading site. From my understanding it was a forum to discuss and promote conservative themes and issues. The fact that this President has so many conservatives up in arms over his administration's failure to protect our nation's borders with what many consider to be amnesty for law breakers, catch and release policies and a refusal to cooperate with local authorities when illegals are apprehended should tell you something. Accusing people of being trolls for pointing this out is a pathetic response to an extremely serious matter.

The emperor is walking down Main St. without proper attire on this issue. It is the opinion of many people on this site that the administration has failed to carry out its duties.

If you follow FR or watch Lou Dobbs, you would see that illegal immigration and border security are discussed on a daily basis. Since the two border patrol agents were convicted, Dobbs, to his credit IMO, has made their plight a nightly crusade,

It has nothing to do with days the President is kicking butt. but there are many of us who think the lack of border security is ridiculous. If you can sneak a truckload of people across the border, why not a WMD?

If you check the polls, I believe you'll find that among the general population, enforcing border security is much more popular than the war in Iraq.

Ha ha, it didn't take long for the 6-year-old tattle-tales to show up.

Good job on bringing this story to light. There's no way these guys will get a presidential pardon. Since the prosecution of these agents and the protection of the drug dealer are under the direction of Bush lackeys, I'm guessing it was done with his tacit approval.
