The bill vetoed today was SB 1437, which had been approved by the Legislature. It would have prevented any school teaching materials or activities from "reflecting adversely" upon homosexuals, bisexuals or transgenders.

I suspect his veto reflects the will of the majority of the California people. So why don't those same people elect representatives who also reflect their will? That state assembly seems WAY out to lunch most of the time.

He said weeks ago that he would veto this. Then he went ahead and signed SB 1441. Nothing new here.

Would require school districts to establish and publicize an antidiscrimination and anti-harassment policy that prohibits discrimination and harassment as specified under current law, including, but not limited to, actual or perceived gender identity and sexual orientation and provides penalties for school districts found to be in violation of that law, including withholding relevant state funding to school districts.

Defines tolerance to mean "attitudes and behaviors that convey respect toward individuals and groups, especially those individuals and groups that have been, and continue to be, systematically and historically marginalized. Tolerance does not mean a passive allowance or indulgence of the beliefs or practices of another individual."

This bill would additionally authorize delivery of an absentee ballot to the absentee voter's child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling, or a person residing in the same household as the absent voter, who is 16 years of age or older. This would include any cohabitating domestic partner.

The bill also would incorporate the definition of "sex" and "sexual orientation" contained in the Fair Employment and Housing Act into this provision relating to state and state-funded programs or activities, and clarify that the perception of any of the characteristics listed in the anti-discrimination statute is also covered.

Assemblymember Levine, D-Van Nuys
Would require that arbitration agreements between employers and employees be voluntary for sexual orientation and other employment discrimination claims under the Fair Employment and Housing Act. Specifies that a FEHA-covered employer may not take adverse employment action against a person for refusing to waive these protections and procedures, and would make unenforceable any arbitration agreement between an employer and employee contrary to the bill's provision.
Status: Failed to pass Assembly.

Excellent point, and one that I would like to explore someday, but many here seem to be fixated on delivering the Governorship back to the Democrats.
If we lose that, the few more seats that we may pick up at a time won't mean anything.

I think the answers to more than just that question is based on social and fiscal issues, and which will do more harm and how fast. and which ones would a core of republicans in the assembly and senate actually be allowed to fight against.
It's a tossup in many cases, imo.
bottom line, is allowing the destruction of the Ca GOP base worth keeping nhim on, as I see that as the eventual outcome and maybe the whole reason he got into the race a few years back, jmo.

My reading of your initial posts on this thread seemed to me that you were unhappy with the veto. RS noticed this, too. I've since read your denial, but suggest you take backhanded compliment lessons from Karaoke.
From previous election results, it appears that before Arnold, the CAGOP base was pretty ineffectual. Those on the extreme that drop off are not going to run and turn into democrats - by dropping off they will simply lose whatever voice and influence they may have had.
As a good sign, it appears that McClintock has finally learned this and may have a chance at the top slot some time in the future - if the Dems get back into power his chances, and that of other conservatives, are over for another generation.
Were this you only post on this thread would go a long way in me re-thinking of you as an ilk. Not quite far enough, but I'm kinda tolerant ;^)
