I enjoyed Steve Irwin's work tremendously and my heart goes out to his family and all Australians but come on, a state funeral? Wouldn't that be like a state funeral for Charlton Heston?
To: SerpentDove
You don't always have "control" when there are wild animals involved I think everyone knows that.
To: SerpentDove
I was one of the doom-and-gloomers who criticized the JFK, Jr. funeral. The JFK, Jr. funeral was a media circus but it was hardly a state funeral.

Wouldn't that be like a state funeral for Charlton Heston? Not really. Our movie stars and celebrities are a dime a dozen.
Australia doesn't have that many citizens that hit world acclaim and he inspired many kids and others.
If they decide he deserves it because he captured their nation's hearts, that's up to them. An Irwin state funeral is more deserved than Elton John getting a Lordship IMO.

Australia doesn't have that many citizens that hit world acclaim and he inspired many kids and others. So does that mean that Nicole Kidman will get one too?

I think the man is worthy of whatever honor Australia decides to give him. If it's a state funeral good on them. He brought a lot of joy to a lot of people. Rest in peace, Steve.

Not to pile on a dead man, but Irwin's death makes this episode seem even more negligent.
Oh, grow up. My dad let me ride in the back of a pickup on the interstate, taught me how to make a pipe bomb for the Bicentennial, shot a rifle straight into the air to try to settle an argument about ballistics, let me corner and kill a badger, taught me to catch rattlesnakes, and all sorts of things that fall into the Irwin catagory.
Did I die? No. Did Irwin's kid die? No. Sure, sometimes bad things happen, but I wouldn't raise my kids with this 21st Century prissy "please-wrap-my-life-in-packing-peanuts-and-put-a-bike-helmet-on-me-before-I-walk-out-the-door" mentality for anything.
I think that the guy should get a state funeral for reminding us how most of the population used to live their lives.
And yes, you did pile onto a dead man,
To: Non-Sequitur
Maybe not a STATE funeral, but the country needs closure. A huge amphitheater funeral, televised..etc,. would give the country a chance to honor his memory and heal.
I would have been against this too, except we just buried my father, a WWII officer. All three of us kids gave a eulogy. It was the best and the hardest thing I've ever done. (I'm an artist, dreadfully emotional and I cry all the time, but I had to stand in front of an overflow crowd and do this for him.) It somehow gave me peace.
The Aussies need to do this too.

How many celebrites have reached out (sincerely) and endeared themselves to the entire world? Steve was unique. He was funny, extremely compassionate about his work, and was willing to risk his life to save the lives of animals worldwide. It is between Australia and the Irwin family. If Terri wants it, she should have it.

I intentionally did a strikethrough on environmentalist and inserted conservationist. There is a big difference between the two. Steve promoted love of nature and the environment through awareness and compassion for all animals. You can hardly say the same of Greenpeace.

Ooooh...how clever.
I guess you are right. It was a highly intelligent move to dance around with a piece of dangling meat in one hand and a baby in the other. He couldn't possibly have slipped or anything.
I stand in awe of your stunning wisdom.

The difference between environmentalists and conservationists is as follows:
A conservationist is in awe of God's beautiful creation and believe that we should do our best not to despoil it, pollute it, and turn it into a wasteland. However, this balanced by the recognition that many people's livelihoods depend on the bounty of creation--farming, mining, fishing, hunting, etc.--and we shouldn't take a man's land to "save" a slug that may have gone extinct regardless of any intervention on the part of man.
An environmentalist is a misantrhope who thinks that humanity is a scourge and should commit mass suicide to save the planet from itself.
I'm happy to condemn the latter--and consider myself the former.

Wouldn't that be like a state funeral for Charlton Heston? What's wrong with that? Heston was out in front in the civil rights movement and marched with MLK. His work in protecting our 2nd Ammendment rights are unquestioned.
I would say he was more deserving than a self-promoting animal handler. (not to take anything away from Irwin, RIP)

I agree. Enveloped in bubble-wrap is no way to go through life.
Steve Irwin was a one-of-a-kind guy and I for one will miss him. May God bless him and may He watch over and protect his family.

I was watching some of Animal Planet's Crocodile Documentaries and there was a scene where he got the call that his wife's water broke. The look on his face was hilarious, then he couldn't find his keys, and then he starts talking to himself "cmon Steve-o, you can find the keys"... It was so cute, and then I started tearing up.
What a loss this is.

Amen. Irwin was what Americans used to be.
