Edmonton -- An Edmonton man convicted of promoting hatred through his website has been sentenced to 16 months in jail.
Reni Sentana-Ries, 63, was told by Mr. Justice Philip Clarke of the Court of Queen's Bench that his views are appalling, that he showed no remorse and that he is a high risk to reoffend.
After his release, Mr. Sentana-Ries, formerly known as Reinhard Gustav Mueller, will face 36 months of probation during which he will not be allowed to use the Internet.
He has also been ordered to take down his website.
Mr. Sentana-Ries was convicted last December because of his website, Federation of Free Planets, which denies the Holocaust and promotes hatred against Jewish people.
It is believed to be the first Internet hate crime case to go to trial in Alberta. CP
Mr. Justice Philip Clarke of the Court of Queen's Bench . . . I hate you.
You hate the judge? Why?
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
Erm, while the guy's obviously a nutcase ('Federation of Free Planets' name of the site is the first clue), that whole incovenient free speech thing seems to have been violated.
Nutcases first, but, where does it stop, though ? Anyone opposing socialized medical care where you can't legally get different service than anyone else if you wanted to ?
I hate hate crime laws and I hate you for asking me why I hate.
I don't disagree with you per se but I wondered about leadpenny's reaction to the ruling. Hate is a pretty strong reaction to a ruling by a judge in a foreign country that doesn't affect the US. Maybe leadpenny's a Canadian, I don't know.
But what counts as "group libel"? What if you say true things about Muslims? Many in the MSM would label that Islamophobic or hate speech. There have been prosecutions already in Australia for statements made about Muslims.
OK, so you hate me. I can deal with that and believe me I won't lose a wink of sleep.
First of all, when you use the sacred name of leadpenny please include the same in the "To:" box, and what makes you think whatever stupid law was used in Canada ain't coming to a country closer to you?
LOL! Whatever.
Lighten up, sag. It's too early in the morning for me do use a "/sarcasm" tag. I don't hate you. I love you.
You didn't see me laughing in that previous post? That's as lighten up as I get.
What free speech thing? I don't think Canadians don't have a right to free speech guaranteed to them in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Even if they do, it is restricted in many ways that Americans and others that truly care about their freedoms would not accept.
;-)
I hate this thread.
This guy, Sentana-Ries, is a pig, no doubt about that. And I would never come to his defense. But... Don't they have free speech in Canada? If someone put up a site like that in the US, would it be taken down? Just wondering.
In a case against Ernst Zundel, the Canadian Hate Crimes Tribunal ruled that "truth is not a defense."
Exactly - implying the hypocrisy of liberalism.
I really hate these two.

I hate the fact that we both hate liberals.
You have it upside down my friend.
I like the fact that we both hate liberals.
I hate the fact that liberals consume oxygen.
See #14
"I hate the fact that liberals consume oxygen."
I agree. I am an accomplice to your hate thought!
All kidding aside, this type of "crime" and "prosecution" is on the rise around the free world.
I agree. I am an accomplice to your hate thought!
Now we're BOTH in deep sheep dip if the anti-hate nazis are on to us.
I never understood the term "hate crime." Is there a "love" crime"? (rolling eyes)
A crime is a crime.
When you look at all the hate directed towards W, ,ost of the democrats would be prosecuted.
I hate that you hate this thread! :)
I think you are being insensitive to my hatred of this thread and my own sense of sensitivity wants you to go to bad a post jail.
*snicker*
I hate hatting people who hate haters on hate threads.
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
"I hate hatting people who hate haters on hate threads."
Hey!! You can't . . . . Oh, yeah. Me too.
Letter to the Editors, Washington Times, circa fall, 1998:
In the waning hours of the 105th Congress, quiet efforts to pass controversial legislation are under way.
The Hate Crimes Prevention Act... cites violence based on sexual orientation as a Hate Crime.
Hate Crimes have commonly been racially motivated. Only in Canada has sexual orientation been included in anti-hate and human rights legislation. The Canadian law does not focus exclusively on physical violence-- it includes all forms of communication as well.
...As a Canadian living in the United States, I fear for your freedom, mainly because you take it for granted.
If my words were published in a Canadian newspaper... I would be charged with inciting hate under the criminal code.
Freedom of speech no longer exists in Canada-- I could not state that AIDS is largely found within the homosexual community, nor quote statistics to back up my assertion.
My opinion would make me a criminal. Since "tolerance" has been redefined... only Political Correctness is tolerated...
The Hate Crimes Prevention Act is a signifigant foot in the door for homosexual rights lobbyists-- it validates the entire... movement as an endangered group in need of special legislative protection.
Violence against any person is already illegal, no matter what the motive.
I find it offensive that violence is noteworthy only when the victim ( is)... a member of some political action group.

You didn't see me laughing in that previous post? That's as lighten up as I get.
LOL! Thanks for the morning *chuckle*
Damn! Now that's funny. LMAO
Christians, of course, are exempt and are fair game for any and all vicious public slander and hatred.
The word hate has been misused. My 1868 Websters describes hate as a strong dislike. A man should be free to have strong dislikes and strong likes.
What ever happened to freedom of speech? I guess they don't have it in England and Canada.
in the immortal words of that most famous felon...rodney king...."can't we all just get along?"
Surely this is not the most important historical fact of all time. The resurrection of Christ is surely more important than even World War II for it has been the linchpin of history for 2000 years. But let us suppose a law which makes it a crime to say that Christ did not rise on the third day. Makes it kind of awkward for Jews and Muslims and atheists . Let us suppose a law which says that it is a crime to say that he did rise on the third day, that could give Christians a bad day.
The Holocaust is not only not the most important historical fact of all time, it is not even the worst holocaust of all time. Hitler's genocide cannot match in quantity the murders of Stalin or Mao or even the unborn babies we have killed since Roe versus Wade. Maybe the people of Georgia can pass a law making it a felony to deny that Sherman burned his way to sea. Maybe we could posthumously convict Walter Duranty for his denial of Stalin's holocaust in the Ukraine. Why don't we conservatives get a law passed that makes it a crime to deny that Ronald Reagan won the Cold War?
I guess the left must think that there is some speech which is so heinous that it deserves no protection. I guess by that logic one must conclude that the souls of 7 million Jews are to be valued more than the souls of 100 million Chinese.
Sometimes the left advances the argument that THE Holocaust is different in character from other holocausts because the Jews were killed only because they were Jews. I had rather thought that the Turks killed the Armenians only because they were Armenian.
The lesson from all this is that you better get your version of history codified before the other side does. Folks, we are in a race to the statute books to decide what goes into the history books.
The other day some younger guy in his 20's came up to me at work, and was talking about how we never went to the moon. I agreed with him and told him the biggest fraud was having people believe there really was a Saturn 5 rocket in the first place. I told him he should let everyone know that he believes there never was a Saturn 5.
For the record, I was 10 and still remember watching the moon walk, on the television. Yes we went to the moon.
Wake me up when Canada prosecutes a Mooooslim website than spews hate
Was done on a Hollywood sound stage. The entire world was played for suckers
I think leadpenny is really being sarcastic/humorous.
We must stamp out intolerance! This man was not conforming to OUR diversity!
</sarcasm>
It would seem the US is the last bastion of free speech in the world.
I hate people that hate...
