BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Hundreds of Iraq's tribal chiefs Saturday signed a "pact of honor," pledging to support the prime minister's national reconciliation plan on wiping out sectarian strife and terrorism tearing the country.
In another boost for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's efforts, a Sunni lawmaker was released nearly two months after she was abducted in an attack that had stoked sectarian tensions and led to a boycott by the minority in parliament.
At least 23 people were killed Saturday, including four members of a Shiite family in Baqouba and a female translator working for the British consulate in Basra, Iraq's second-largest city.
"Realizing the gravity of the situation our country is undergoing, we pledge in front of God and the Iraqi people to be sincere and serious in preserving the unity of our country," said the pact signed by tribal leaders and sheiks at a national conference.

but, but, but, It's a civil war, a quagmire, worse than Vietnam. We should cut, run, redeploy, etc. You know, Karl Rove planned it all this way so that the Republicans would get a bounce in the polls prior to the elections.
Yup...but I don't get upset when filthy vermin kill each other.
There have been many good developments in Iraq in the past several weeks. This is the first of them I've seen reported in the MSM.
Time will tell. Hope is a wonderful thing.
I agree. Looks like a 'let's play nice for a while'(wink, wink). Once the infidels are gone we can chop up what's left between us.
This is fine so long as they distinguish between militias which INITIATE force, like al-Sadr's shiites, al-Qaeda and whatever the sunni's one is called -- and the Peshmerga - the Kurdish militia, which is now a DEFENSIVE force, and which must be left in place, IMHO.
Beware of arabs in the night . . .
HONOR , you got to be kidding .
Have you ever heard of their honor killings of women . . .
It does sound promising. I wonder how much public announcements they use to help sway people. I also would like to see these types of pledges spread to the tribe members and through the various mosques. Maybe if that'd happen, it'd reach a lot more of the right people who need to give up the way of the gun.
This is a BIG deal.
Here is a mooselimb wearing his "pack of honor".
