Bags of water hung to keep flies away

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Restaurant operators along the coasts of Florida are trying a new, yet simple, way to repel flies on dining patios -- hanging bags of water.

Scientists say the method has no real merit, but restaurateurs on the Florida Keys and as far away as Texas swear by it, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

"It seems to be working," said Jeannie Eckbloom, a longtime server at Gator's, on the Seminole-Volusia line. "It's even keeping the birds away."

Some scientists believe the way the light shines through the water disorients the flies, which is why they are repelled.

The idea reportedly started in North Carolina a couple of years ago, where the bags were marketed as "Fly Fright." The company that sold those bags now appears to be out of business, the newspaper said.

It has an unfortunate side effect in that it also disorients blondes.

Carlo..

We started seeing this around the Hill Country around 3-4 years ago... It did seem like there were less flies... but you know .. it's hard to say... laugh...

I do know the server said it was pretty funny when one fell on one of the other servers...

Dosn't work on Tennessee flies either.

I saw it being used at a restaurant with outdoor seating in the Beavers Bend state park in Ok. I couldn't say whether or not it worked though.

after a few days you will have to go cut the bag down and throw it away because it will be FULL of flies

that sounds like the same stupid pheromone trick as the Japanese beetle traps that draw all the beetles in the neighborhood to your yard.

Really good for fleas is diatomaceous earth and it is cheap to buy and use and wholly non-toxic. I sprayed it on my yard some years ago and have not been bothered by our once annual spring siege since. The dog stays in the yard and does not get fleas. It is good for any bugs with segmented shells. It does not wash away with the rain unless you have a pretty severe slope.

Ha!ha! This technique is not new. I've seen it used by several vendors in 1996 at the Grand Canyon. Seemed to work!

This is just like the Mexicans you see driving around with a CD hanging from the rear view mirror - they believe it makes their car invisible to police radar!... ya want to get rid of flies? go to the hardware store and get something they call the flybag. Follow the directions. use 2-3. Keep them at least 30 feet from where you want to be...they stink, but they work. after a few days you will have to go cut the bag down and throw it away because it will be FULL of flies. BTW, got fleas? Put nematodes in your soil....get'em at your feed store. google around for beneficial nematode and flea

Good information... thanks.

We have real problem with bees here. Wonder if it would work on them also. Prob not. We tried the old coke in a tin pan trick but that did not seem to work though either.

The MythBusters busted the CD myth.

If you want to keep fleas out of your yard plant chrysanthemums. There is something in them that fleas don't like.

I vouch for the fly bags stinking. They truly STINK and it doesn't dissipate for a long time!

Diatomaceous earth will also keep ants and roaches away from dog food. We used to have ants parked in our mailbox - very annoying - till we dusted it with DE. Of course, had to explain to the mailman that the white powder is NOT an illegal drug!)

I've seen street food vendors attach 5 to 6 small tape-recorder motors on a wooden beam, below the ceiling of the stall.

xxxxxxxxxx

Its called meat for lunch.

I have some hanging up (my wife)

I hope you give her a break once in a while. Her arms probably get tired. ;-)

***Anything special about these bags?***

Yes.

Hi! I'm Billy Mays for "Water Bags"!
These amazing bags are $49.95 each. BUT if you order now - dial 1-800-IAM-DUMB, operators are waiting - they're only $19.95 each (PLUS S&H). And if you call in the next ten minutes we'll throw in an extra bag F-R-E-E. As a special BONUS we'll also include a Pet Rock! But you must order N-O-W.

(No C.O.D. and not available in NY, Mass, IL, CA, or any other state with laws against fraud.)

[Outlaw Billy Mays - or will someone please beat the crap out of him.]
