Russian Military To Practice Repelling Invasion From East

by Staff Writers

Moscow (AFP) Aug 15, 2006

Russia's military will practice repelling a foreign invasion during exercises this month in the country's far east, the newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta said Tuesday. The exercises will take place on the Kamchatka peninsula some time in the second half of August and will be presided over by President Vladimir Putin, the newspaper said, citing unnamed sources on the military's general staff.

The aim is to improve cooperation between different arms of the military in "defending the coast from possible armed invasion," the newspaper said.

"The 'conditional opponents' are not abstract terrorists but the armed forces of real states," the paper said.

Taking part will be 5,000 servicemen, 20 ships, nuclear submarines, artillery and air defence forces, the newspaper said.

The exercises will be a continuation of staff-level exercises that took place last month, the paper said.

The military will practice "repelling a coastal landing by foreign forces, cutting the naval communications of the conditional opponents and fighting submarines and airborne enemies," the newspaper said.

"defending the coast from possible armed invasion,"

China would not invade Kamchatka Coast. They have to travel around Korea to do that. If China has to, it will cross overland border. So that would leave Japan.

Russia must be reacting to the rise of Japanese military profile as much as China is.

Let's have the Russian military practice on our Southern border? I'd be glad to welcome them!

If I was paranoid, I would think that Putin has foreknowledge of an impending major war in the Middle East.

Kamchatka is a little out of the way militarily. The center of the real area of interest, where Japan, China, Korea, and Russia meet or focus is close to Vladivostok, and from there it is a train ride to Moscow.

Re #5

You might give it a second thought. If they do, they are more likely to have joint exercise with Mexican Army for shooting down U.S. jets with S-300 system.

Better they should consider their southwestern borders. The day is coming when Putin, or whoever is incharge then, will have great regrets over the assistance given to the mullahs.

Of course, that is what this exercise is really for. It is just that doing it in Kamchatka is safer.

Re #11

Actually they are holding another exercise (now or are about to) in Central Asia to repel enemy warplanes with S-300. Yeah, an exercise to shoot down invading U.S. warplanes.:)

Apparently, Iran is not a problem for them.

Russia has to stay as strong as possible. The world instability resulting from the fall of the USSR and the pullback from the ME led directly to the increase of islamofascism. Power vacuum. If Russia were not able to defend the East and the oil/gas fields, islamofascism would be a picnic by comparison.

Re #16

It depends on the nature of training. And the political emphasis given to such an event.

..We have military on the far east that need training. Most time- and money- wise effective way to train them is to practice locally ..

Of course that is correct, and all militaries everywhere are usually conducting training exercises of some kind.

It's the presence of Putin that seems to indicate a certain significance in this case.

I agree. Nobody is worried about Japanese aggression. This military exercise could be motivated to some extent by recent aggressive actions by North Korea.

It will be. Along with the rest of the Stans if the mullahs are not put in their place. And with Russia making that more difficult, Putin's successors will be looking back asking "what happened???"

Re #31

Oh, so you admit that KGB boys are lost in this game. It is OK that KGB does it to even the score, even if Mullahs wiped out any pro-Russian elements in Iran. Russia already know that Iran's regime hates likes of Russia, but still go ahead to seal a pact to bleed U.S. Yes, KGB tops CIA in this regard.

There was a heck of an armor battle between Japan and Russia in Siberia about 1938. The Russian general went on to fight Germany at Kursk a couple times. The Japanese armor was never heard of again.

Are there even any overland communications routes from the mainland around the top of the Sea of Okhotsk southwards? Magadan is the city at the top of the Sea isn't it?

Last topo/geographical mental snapshot I have for that area is probably pretty out of date. My mental maps are from an old war game, "Objective: Moscow", everybody against the Soviets, maps stretched from the Far East to Central Europe, a real slugfest.

Actually, as Vlad is Russian nickname for names containing the Slavic element volod, i.e. "rule", it is OK both for Vladimir and Vladislav, however it is more common to connect it to Vladislav and use "Volodya" or "Vova" for Vladimir. So you are both right. QED!

Well it was the Cold War, :).
To be fair we also played games where the Soviets were the good guys, usually fighting the Germans and usually designed by Jack "Red" Radey of the company "People's War Games".
I had; To The Wolf's Lair (East Prussia), Korsun Pocket (big cauldron battle on the Dnepr or Don with Germans on the inside of the pocket), Black Sea, Black Death (Soviet naval infantry landings against Germa/German allied positions around Novorossisk), Kanev (Soviet airborne/partisan operations against Germans in theKanevbridgehead), Destruction of Army Group Center, and a bunch of other games.

My friends and I were all conservatives in high school during the '70s when "conservative wasn't cool", we weren't against the Russian people per se, just the Party, truth be told we'd like Russia and the Russian people to be our allies and friends and generally wished them all the best and were thrilled when the great change came with glasnost and perestroika.

That also leaves the US as a possible invader (at least in the eyes of the Russian military) The US is the only country with the naval capability to attack Russia with an invasion force.

The Chinese and Russian wargames were directed at the US. This wargame is no exception.
