Also, are you a vegetarian?

Yeah, I am!!!

If not, spare me the sanctimony, since presumably you consume "innocent animals" all the time.

I guess if you had waited for an answer to your first question you wouldn't have had to ass-u-me you already knew the answer, eh?!?

No, in this situation, the health of the human comes first.

The health of the human could have been handled quite nicely with a series of six shots as many people have pointed out...completely invalidating that statement.

What makes a meerkat more deserving of life than a chicken?

I think "humanizing" animals actually just reduces the value of human life......

Thems with the guns makes the rules. If meerkats had guns and fought back, I'm sure we would think they were just as deserving of life as we are.

Please tell me your family philosophy only applies to thinks killed with your gun while hunting. We have killed roaches, flies, ants, and mice. I don't want to eat them. ;-)

You're right...why would I allow someone espousing their beliefs as a matter of fact to be insulting...especially when they then claim those views to merely be "opinions"...on as you say a "news and opinion" website. Uh Huh.

As for the last paragraph of your post...shoo fly, shoo!...mean anything to you? *wink*wink*

"What makes a meerkat more deserving of life than a chicken?"

It's a mammal thing. I first came across mammal chauvinism during the original uproar over clubbing seal pups in Canada. Yet no one was averse to lobsters being submersed screaming in boiling water. Those big mammal eyes just do us in. Cows, oddly, excepted, of course.

I had to go back to my original post to see what it is you are talking about. I don't see it. My statement was clearly identified as something "I think" and nothing more. One cannot be too thin-skinned and participate in political and cultural debates.

As for the last paragraph of your post...shoo fly, shoo!...mean anything to you? *wink*wink*

Nice response to my obvious provocation.....

LOL. Yes. The family philosophy, shared by most old-time hunters, applied only to things considered fit for those at the top of the food chain. Like all kids, I was revolted by the thought of eating bugs or mice...even after it was explained to me that they are sources of protein and eating them beats starving. :)

I still think justice would have been served by giving the family the choice of eating the meerkats (after it was found they did not have rabies, of course) or getting the shots...

Too damn bad they don't have a photo of the parents with the poor child with their names on the front page of the paper and a special photo of them and the dead animals prominently on display at the zoo.

Kid must have watched too many of those animal planet meerkat specials. Cute? Yes. Wanna pet one? No thanks.

I had them 15 years ago, after being attacked by a stray tomcat whose behavior was bizarre enough to suggest that he might well be rabid. 6 shots, each a week or two apart. No big deal.

My daughter had them 12 years ago. They are no big deal compared to the old ones, but they are much much larger doses than most other injections. My daughter got the first couple in her upper leg.

Yes, I've noted the trend towards prolonged strollerization of children, and also the correlation between excess weight and prolonged strollerization.

H.R. 2392, the Federal Strollerization Regulation and Protection Act (also known as No Child Wheeled Around), will discourage such excess with its severe penatlies.

Vaccines and just about any medication have side effects. I wouldn't want to take anything myself that was not absolutely necessary, and I wouldn't want children to either.

As for the innocent animals - I hope you don't wear or use any leather products either.

Now, now, I didn't call for government regulation. But the sight of large children being wheeled around is getting all too common. And many are being steadily supplied with junk food and sugary beverages by their parents, at the same time they're being wheeled around. Their parents should be free to do whatever idiotic stuff they like, but you and I shouldn't get socked with the resulting medical bills these kids will start incurring at an early age. Even if they're "privately" insured, the insurance industry is regulated to the point where the rest of us will share equally in any premium increases required by the growing numbers of people coming down with Type II diabetes in childhood or very early adulthood, and progressing quickly to all the other ailments associated with both obesity and diabetes. If these parents knew that THEY would be footing the bill for the illness-inducing way they're raising their children, a lot more of them would ditch the strollers.

A few months ago ate very strictly vegan for two months and it cleared up my gout 95%. Yes. I know vegan does not equal vegetarian

The health of the human could have been handled quite nicely with a series of six shots as many people have pointed out...completely invalidating that statement.

Or by simply sending the stupid girl home with her stupid parents and forgetting about them. Given that these meerkats had already been vaccinated against rabies, the chance of the stupid girl actually contracting rabies even without getting her 6 shots was virtually zero.

I really hope the identities of the stupid girl and her stupid parents are publicly known in their neighborhood, workplaces, and school. If so, they'll live to regret their stupid choices in a big way.

LOL! Good!

I know I probably made that sound like I didn't think there were a lot of Republican vegetarians the way I stated that...it's just that 'some people' instantly throw out the label that anyone who doesn't consume meat HAS to be a loony-tree-hugging-birkenstock-wearing-vegetarian-liberal.

That myth is so debunked...I've been known, without hesitation, to own up to the first four labels...just don't ever accuse me of being in any form or fashion a liberal! That boils my blood! Lol!

In my immediate family, without exception, every Republican is a vegetarian and every Democrat is a carnivore...

The Republican tent is much bigger & more diverse than many people seem to think...this morning I let some of that 'thinking' or rather the 'lack of thinking' disturb me...I should not have.

WOW! OMG! What are you saying?!? Leather is from an animal?!? {{{rolls eyes}}}*sigh*

It is apparent you and I 'see' the situation with totally different eyes...I 'see' that an ignorant, irresponblible, idiotic, selfish family CAUSED the unnecessary death of 5 INNOCENT living creatures...period. I repeat, apparently, you 'see' it differently and have a real problem with my 'seeing' these five little Meerkats as INNOCENT! ?!?

Quite certainly we are not going to see eye to eye on this...moving on, nothing else to 'see' here.
