Russia says UN weakened by US support of Israel

Russia and other UN Security Council members are unhappy Washington is blocking attempts to pressure Israel over its offensive in Lebanon, Vitaly Churkin, its ambassador to the United Nations, said.

Churkin told the Izvestia newspaper in an interview published today that the US position had weakened the position of the United Nations on the crisis.

"Discontent has been rising recently among Security Council member countries with the fact that the US is prepared to block any decision which would bring pressure to bear on Israel," Churkin said.

"This discontent is expressed practically every day by many delegations during consultations on Lebanon," he said. Churkin said that when council members discussed Israel's killing of four unarmed UN peacekeepers, US officials had removed any words that could cast a shadow on Israel's action.

UN Security still to agree on mandate

The three-week-old war in Lebanon, sparked when Hizbollah militants seized two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid, has killed 646 people in Lebanon and 54 Israelis.

Israel says it will not stop fighting until an international force is in place in southern Lebanon, but the UN Security Council has yet to agree on a mandate for such a force.

Churkin said Russia had to understand the composition of such a force before supporting it. When asked about the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, Churkin said: "Russia insists that a ceasefire in Lebanon to allow the resolution of humanitarian problems should be reached as soon as possible."

"The Americans and the English have a rather different position. But there are some signs that the US is starting to understand that it must work towards ending this bloody nightmare," he added.

Britain has stuck closely to the US line that a ceasefire must be "sustainable" - seen by some critics as a green light for Israel to go on bombing Lebanon.

""Discontent has been rising recently among Security Council member countries with the fact that the US is prepared to block any decision which would bring pressure to bear on Israel," Churkin said. "

Now that that is rich, coming from the country that has effectively prevented any real action from being taken against the terrorist Iran and North Korea regimes.

Excellent. Talk about killing many birds with one stone.

Kill terrorists, dismantle Iran and Syria's ability to make Asymmetrical mischief, help Israel secure one of its borders, Piss off the Wacko Leftist and weaken the UN.

Been a very good 3 weeks for Liberty!

The only way a ceasefire with Hezbollah will be "sustainable" is when Israel is the only side left standing (and every single member of Hezbollah is marinating in hell).

Yes it has. If somehow Chirac or Putin or Mad Mahmoud thought they would control the debate, they all ended up standing with their hands out waiting for Bush. And he ain't giving anything out.

UN Weakened by RUSSIA's support of radical Islamic regimes

Since Russia can't understand the concept of unconditional surrender/unmitigated victory when it comes to fighting Islamic terrorism, they deserve to lose Chechnya and they can become comfortable with the Dhimmi tax.

Hey, Russia and France:

Now you know what it feels like when an erstwhile ally stabs you in the back at the UN and refuses to consider anything you present. Sucks, don't it?

Payback's a iron-clad b****.

Russia loses credability by supporting the UNcivilized ....
The majority in the UNcivilized are the theives, killers and whatever other crime could be committed. Support for the UNcivilized will get a nation killed.
oil for food isn't the only crime of the UNcivilized.
professional criminal organization the 'un'.....Have the warrants been drawn up yet for this 'un' scandal?
Not likely, in fact a dollar to a donut, the oil for food is only a scratch on the surface of the 'un' corrupt as our beloved media loves to call them. Kofi said, "Hey there's simply too many people involved and we here at the 'un' chose to forget about it. You would be wise to do the same."
Now I'm just a dumb ole hick but isn't there something wrong with this 'un' picture?
