Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson stump for Lamont

Democratic U.S. Senate contender Ned Lamont will get a campaign boost Wednesday from the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who will campaign with him Wednesday and Thursday in four cities.

Lamont, who will face 18-year incumbent Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of New Haven in an Aug. 8 Democratic primary, also will appear Wednesday on Sharpton's syndicated radio program.

"These two leaders represent hope and bring voice to many people who have been disenfranchised," Lamont spokeswoman Liz Dupont-Diehl said of the two. "We are very pleased they have come to support Ned. It shows that the campaign is about hope, and getting people involved in the process - and spread the word that every vote counts."

Jackson, 65, a Baptist minister and veteran civil rights leader, contended unsuccessfully for the 1984 and 1988 Democratic presidential nominations.

Sharpton, 52 is a Pentecostal minister and also a longtime civil rights advocate.

Though Sharpton never has held elected office, he ran for the U.S. Senate from New York in 1988, 1992, and 1994, and in 1997 ran for mayor of New York City.

He announced in January 2003 he would seek the Democratic presidential nomination, but 14 months later endorsed the eventual 2004 nominee, U.S. Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

Sharpton, a Pentecostal minister and onetime tour manager for soul singer James Brown, first gained prominence in 1987 by embracing the claims of Tawana Brawley, a 15-year-old black girl in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., who claimed that she had been raped by six white men, including some police officers and a prosecutor, in a nearby town.

After Brawley's claims were discredited, Sharpton and two lawyers who had backed his campaign were ordered to pay $345,000 in damages for defaming the prosecutor, Steven Pagones. Sharpton has refused to apologize to Pagones, and his share of the judgment was paid by a friend.

He also has been accused of fomenting an arson and riot in which several people died in 1995 by calling the Jewish owner of a store in Harlem a "white interloper" and standing by while one of his associates urged a gathered crowd to burn the store down.

Sharpton, who long has accused the media of racial prejudice, launched a national talk radio program in January on the Radio One network.

Lamont is scheduled to appear on Sharpton's program at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Other Lamont campaign stops this day include: * A rally with Sharpton at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Mount Aery Baptist Church in Bridgeport.

* A rally with Sharpton and Jackson at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Bethel, AME Church in New Haven.

* A breakfast with Jackson at 9 a.m. Thursday at the East End Senior Center, 80 Coventry St., Hartford.

* A rally with Jackson and a machinists union at 3 p.m. Thursday in Middletown.

No, actually these two hucksters represent the public face of vitriolic anti-Semitism in the Democratic party...

I'm reminded of the saying "If you sleep with dogs, you will get fleas".

What do Jesse and Al-Sharpton think of Lamont's membership in an all white country club?

I think this "support for the war" mantra from the Lamont people is just a cover so they can get rid of a pro Israeli jew without saying they're getting rid of a pro Israeli jew.

Thanks. It doesn't sound like this will make much of a difference. The WOT is probably more important.

Liberal blogs have been whining all over the net, saying that Joe Lieberman have been attacking leftist Democrats. Which is illegal you know, attacking an endangered species.
