Germany backs Britain's refusal to call for ceasefire
Guardian ^ | 8/1/06 | Oliver King

Posted on 08/01/2006 10:13:51 AM PDT by pissant

Britain and Germany today watered down a strong European Union call for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Lebanon conflict as foreign ministers clashed in Brussels.

Instead of calling for an immediate ceasefire a convoluted statement issued by the 25 member states called for "an immediate end to hostilities to be followed by a sustainable ceasefire".

The move by Britain and Germany backs the stance of the United States which believes a ceasefire call should only be made if it was "sustainable".

It will be also interpreted as a snub to Jacques Chirac, the French president, who has been demanding an immediate ceasefire.

Margaret Beckett, the foreign secretary, was joined by her German, Czech and Polish counterparts in resisting a challenge by the Finns and the French to unite behind a stronger statement which also warned of breaches of international law in the three-week old conflict.

But Mrs Beckett said that Israel could not interpret the EU statement as a "green light" to continue its military actions in Lebanon.

"immediate cease-fire" or "immediate end to hositilities" - the only thing that happened is that once again the EU has shown how irrelevant it is.

World politics is not decided by "lagaleze" but hard facts. Hopefully the US and Israel are creating those in the Middle East as we speak.

The day always seems brighter when the French get burned. The Poles are good people, Czech's thank you, and seems Merkel is proving a strong ally with Blair/Britain against France. If Sarkozy were able to win election in France, it would make the European Union a powerful ally alongside us, Australia, Japan and so forth against China and Russia's alliance with Iran and Syria. India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt seemingly leaning our way in this war too. Iraq and Afghanistan not effective allies any longer for the fascists in the M.E.

This is foing to hurt baby Assad, mini Hitler and Hezbollah though. They are used to unconditional support from Europe. On top of the G-8 release, this must depress them.

I try not to leave nations off deserving credit. I failed in this instance.

Special apologies to the Canadians as well. Harper has been doing a fabulous job, so far, over there. And he's clearly been strong in supporting Israeli's here. And thanks to any other nations I've left off that weren't directly mentioned, but worthy of praise too.
