Britain and Germany today watered down a strong European Union call for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Lebanon conflict as foreign ministers clashed in Brussels.
Instead of calling for an immediate ceasefire a convoluted statement issued by the 25 member states called for "an immediate end to hostilities to be followed by a sustainable ceasefire".
The move by Britain and Germany backs the stance of the United States which believes a ceasefire call should only be made if it was "sustainable".
It will be also interpreted as a snub to Jacques Chirac, the French president, who has been demanding an immediate ceasefire.
Margaret Beckett, the foreign secretary, was joined by her German, Czech and Polish counterparts in resisting a challenge by the Finns and the French to unite behind a stronger statement which also warned of breaches of international law in the three-week old conflict.
But Mrs Beckett said that Israel could not interpret the EU statement as a "green light" to continue its military actions in Lebanon.

LoL!
LOL!
Dividends.
This is all Bush's fault! This would never of happened if Al Gore or John Kerry were President!
heh heh!
Sure this isn't scrappleface or something? I'm going to have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming.
Sounds like the German's and Brits are realists. this is good news. France on the other hand is becoming like russia and china. A destabilizing force thats works against democracy and liberty.I know they are many good frenhcmen but I dont not trust the French government at all.
Brilliant!
You'd think he goosed her from that pic. ;o)
Just wait til she's invited to Crawford in the middle of August. She'll never forgive him. ;o)
Maybe that was the double barreled version of that slick move that Spock would pull on people.
Nope. None of this would happen with Kerry as president. We'd all be studying the koran by now.
"immediate cease-fire" or "immediate end to hositilities" - the only thing that happened is that once again the EU has shown how irrelevant it is.
World politics is not decided by "lagaleze" but hard facts. Hopefully the US and Israel are creating those in the Middle East as we speak.
LOL. Pat Buchanan is saddened.
"lagaleze" = "legaleze"
I haven't trusted the French gov't since the French Reolution.
Hmmmm.. And here the liberals have been crying that we 'have no allies' in Europe.
Oh,, I get it. 'No allies' means the FRENCH!
He needs practice then, Spock always knocked em cold within seconds. ;o)
The French just want to cut and run, cut and run, cut and run.
I think we are. Israel seems pretty confident right now. And the moonbat in Iran has his panties in a smelly knot.
"This would never of happened if Al Gore or John Kerry were President!"
Because they do like the best bad massages ever.
Same as it menat in the Iraq invasion. Forget that Spain, Italy, Denmark, Poland, Portugal, England, Scotland, Holland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Romania were on board.
Lagaleze? Is that the term that defines the liberals failure to act in most cases?
The power of a diplomatic massage! LOL
It's a very good fortune to have the Germans in our corner.
France has been in the doldrums since Waterloo.
Especially if the AC happened to break down during her visit. She might go Gerhard Schroeder on him.
Not sure how much Germany has to add to this situation, but they could be key in applying economic sanctions on Iran.
And fed roasted armidillo to boot.
American isolation from the world community bump.
Yeah, W just got some flailing and that's it - kinda weak.
"Forget that Spain, Italy, Denmark, Poland, Portugal, England, Scotland, Holland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Romania were on board."
See? See? Right there!!! NO FRANCE!!! /liberal moonbat rant off.
Wonder what "world leaders" in restaurants are telling John Kerry these days?
Very weak.
Exactly
insert crying frenchman pic.
The day always seems brighter when the French get burned. The Poles are good people, Czech's thank you, and seems Merkel is proving a strong ally with Blair/Britain against France. If Sarkozy were able to win election in France, it would make the European Union a powerful ally alongside us, Australia, Japan and so forth against China and Russia's alliance with Iran and Syria. India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt seemingly leaning our way in this war too. Iraq and Afghanistan not effective allies any longer for the fascists in the M.E.
This is foing to hurt baby Assad, mini Hitler and Hezbollah though. They are used to unconditional support from Europe. On top of the G-8 release, this must depress them.
Jacque Strap is about as useless and feckless as they come.
We live in a messed up world where the Germans don't want to go to war and the French think that Americans are arrogant.
Too bad they don't commit collective suicide....wait, they seem to be doing that. LOL
Thankfully, Patton and co. neutered Germany. France was Neutered 2 centuries ago.
I try not to leave nations off deserving credit. I failed in this instance.
Special apologies to the Canadians as well. Harper has been doing a fabulous job, so far, over there. And he's clearly been strong in supporting Israeli's here. And thanks to any other nations I've left off that weren't directly mentioned, but worthy of praise too.
smoke? fire?
I could have done without THAT mental image - especially in this heat!
data did pretty god with it to. mccoy otoh, just couldn't get it right (even with spocks marbles)
The nerve of these principled, liberty minded leaders denying Jacque his birthright to surrender to an enemy!
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
Seen sunny days I thought would never end
Sorry.
Uh, OK. Is data a character I missed?
France was neutered by Germany : )
He already surrended to the muzzies in his slums. Pathetic how far they have fallen.
