The publicity surrounding The Passion has fed all sorts rumours - particularly of an anti-semitic nature. Much of this has been provoked by the increasingly bizarre public comments of Gibson's 85-year-old father, Hutton. Gibson senior is a self-confessed anti-semite and Holocaust denier. In one recent radio interview, he claimed there were no Nazi extermination camps: "They [the Jews] simply got up and left! They were all over the Bronx and Brooklyn and Sydney, Australia, and Los Angeles."
He went on to claim: "They're after one world religion and one world government. That's why they've attacked the Catholic Church so strongly, to ultimately take control over it by their doctrine."
Gibson senior belongs to the extreme fringe of the Catholic Traditionalist movement which has gone so far as claiming that the Church in Rome has been taken over by a weird coalition of Jews and Freemasons acting for Satan. However such conspiracy theories are not representative of the Traditionalist movement as a whole.
I think he can slide - unless there's video. It'll be on YouTube in a week.
Possibly true, but also sounds like a hit job manufactured by people who want to get Mel Gibson and pin an anti-semitism label on him. BTW I think Gibson has become pompously in love with himself but I hate to see a guy tarred by a smear.
If that police report is legit, it will be on smoking gun in a day.
Yeah it does sound too pat. I sure as hell hope it isn't true.
I have always read that he had a bad drinking problem back in the Mad Max days and had quite a temper (his comments in his biography) but had long ago quit drinking and cleaned himself up what with his large family, building his own Catholic Church on his property, etc.. This is a little shocking, but he has also not looked like himself for a while. Wonder what the backstory on this really is?

Mel Gibson, 50, `Mad Max' Actor, Arrested on Suspicion of DUI
July 28 (Bloomberg) -- Mel Gibson, the actor who has portrayed characters such as ``Mad Max'' and directed ``The Passion of the Christ,'' was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving early today, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's department spokesman said.
Gibson, 50, was pulled over by a deputy on California's Pacific Coast Highway at about 2:30 a.m. for driving above the speed limit, spokesman Steve Whitmore said in an interview.
``The deputy smelled alcohol on his breath'' and conducted a field sobriety test, Whitmore said. ``And he was arrested.''
Gibson was released at about 9:45 a.m. with a citation. The sheriff's department is in the middle of investigating the matter, Whitmore said. Gibson's publicist Alan Nierob didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.
Gibson won two Oscars in 1995 for best picture and best director for the movie ``Braveheart,'' in which he also starred as Sir William Wallace, according to Internet Movie Database.
