Because if they were literate in English they might understand who and what he is really about and vote for someone else.

It used to be that we got the smarter immigrants who were capable of learning English. Our borders are so wide open today that the dumb ones are able to make it here too. And they are too friggin' dumb to pick up English

Sent to his office this evening...

Dear Public Servant Hinojosa,

Recently you've had your underpanties in a knot over the evil republicans wanting English Only.

In case you forgot, this is America .We speak English here and LEGAL immigrants must learn it.

We Americans are sick and tired of the invasion of illegals who bring crime, disease and dumb down our schools while leeching services. So we will not be obliging them.To insist on Spanish anywhere in America would simply be "dumbing down".

Being a public servant such as yourself ,you are aware ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE CRIMINALS.It is against the law.If you support ILLEGAL activity in any way ,shape or form, you are unfit for office and we must ensure your defeat next election.

Signed,
A Taxpayer

PS...You can call me a racist but Id rather be racist and LEGAL then a supporter of IlLEGAL ALIENS and committing an ILLEGAL CRIME in my support of them.

And they are too friggin' dumb to pick up English

This is an ignorant stereotype. Many immigrants and guest workers have no need to learn English because they don't intend to stay. They don't care if America makes English the official language because it doesn't affect them. They are able to work and shop within their communities...much like the Germans, Italians, Chinese, Irish, Poles, and Jews who immigrated in great waves of poverty through out our history. Until recently the US Government did not have the means to stop it. It remain to be seen if the American people want to authorize the money and force needed to accomplish an impenetrable barrier to our neighbors and trading partners. Or still further to rip families apart and send able bodied workers to mass on our southern border.

It has been shown on this thread that English does not equal smart. I have no problem with English being declared the official language, and since it seems purely symbolic in nature, I don't know why anyone but the most radical would complain.

French is the official languace of France.
German is the official language of Germany.
English is the official language of trade, travel, and media. There are exceptions but if you want to succeed in America you have to speak English.

A law won't change that.

This is a ploy. A meaningless gesture like the Protection of the Flag bill that get trotted out each election.

WASHINGTON - Congress' standoff over immigration legislation flared into emotional rhetoric Wednesday over a House proposal to make English the nation's official language. A Hispanic lawmaker said that was "code for official discrimination."

Discrimination against whom? All my immigrant friends, those from Germany, Italy, France and China had the decency to learn English before they came here. They felt it would be an insult to expect Americans to learn their language(s).

"Hispanic lawmaker blasts English proposal It is either English only, or it soon becomes Spanish only."

Bearing in mind that, for a very brief period; it was not only Spanish only, but Catholic only...

Speaking of separation of church and state...

Uh, no. Bush was the first to bring that up. One of the bones Rove apparently thought would satisfy the little people objecting to Bush's radical plans.

Bush was for spanish as our new language before he was against it.

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. "...the Department of Education has not devised sufficient tools for schools to assess how well students with limited English are performing."

Two + dos = foe.

Isn't that the majority of public school students, Ruben?

He represents Hildalgo County and the McAllen City area. This area is the Texas Democrat stronghold. He will be re-elected over and over.

"A Hispanic lawmaker said that was "code for official discrimination."

Quite the contrary.

Not making ENglish an official language is discriminatory towards the myriads of OTHER nationalities who come here every day and take the time and effort to learn English.

Its about time Hispanics who come to America LEARN and USE English, the common tongue of the rest of America and stop expecting everybody from the gopvernment on down to provide them with bilingual translations.

Americans have turned into a nation of wimps by permitting their rights to be eroded by these narrow constituency pressure groups and the politically correct prostitutes in the legislatures and courts who pander to them.

America belongs to the taxpayers who foot the bills, not to these special interest groups, illegal invaders and OUR EMPLOYEES in the government.

Of course they do. They realize we have a President who will give America away to them, so they take full advantage.

And not just a president by shockingly most of the U.S. Senators. Only two Democrats voted against a bill to surrender to the invasion.
