Storm in the Gulf of Mexico is picking up steam; wind gusts to 50 mph

MIAMI - Hurricane forecasters now say conditions are right for a low-pressure area off Mexico in the Gulf of Mexico to intensify, become better organized and possibly form into a tropical depression. That word from the National Hurricane Center in Miami at 11:30 a.m.
Earlier today, the hurricane center just made a passing mention of the shower activity in the western gulf.
As of late morning, the Miami forecasters say monitoring equipment on buoys in the gulf have picked up wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph.
"A tropical depression could develop during the next day or so if the low pressure area remains offshore," said a hurricane center advisory.
Forecasters put the center of the storm off La Pesca, Mexico.
Other than this low, there is no other tropical storm development anywhere in the gulf, the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, the hurricane center reported.

To: xjcsa
[media desperately hoping for a big hurricane] You're absolutely correct. With so many news channels running 24 hours a day, the American attention span has gotten even shorter and the media is constantly pushing for the next big thing. Think to yourself, how long has it been since you've heard an alarming report on the bird flu? That was replaced by the North Korean missile launches and now the Israelis and arabs. Next: a killer huurricane.
To: ghost of nixon
- has the hurricane season not lived up to the hype so far?The 2004 season started slowly.
The first storm of the 1992 season wasn't until mid-August. The "A" storm that year was Andrew.
Never underestimate a hurricane season until it's over.

We could use some in Alabama as well. Sadly, the corn crop is too far gone to recoup even if this depression came our way. However, peanuts and cotton are hanging in there. Let it rain!

The end of August even, for Andrew, the 24th, about 4:30 AM. I'll never forget that one, was right in the middle of it. But, you're right, 1992 was a low activity year for hurricanes.

Last year by this time, hurricanes Cindy, Dennis, and Emily had all struck land in the Gulf as hurricanes - Cindy near New Orleans; Dennis in Florida (and Cuba); and Emily on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. Dennis and Emily were major hurricanes. This was, of course, the fault of Global Warming, the USA's failure to ratify Kyoto, America being too rich and unilateral, and George W. Bush allowing Karl Rove to play with the hurricane generator too much.
This year we've had practically nothing; I believe Boston got a little rain at some point. I'm waiting for the press to start talking about how global warming (er, Global Warming...I mean Climate Change) is over and everything's fine. I'm sure it will start very soon...

Don't really want a hurricane but we could sure use some good rains in Texas. A hurricane might not be so bad if it came ashore below Brownsville (area sparsely populated), took out all of the border crossings, and brought the rains to our "dry lake" in East Texas. Just a thought.
To: xjcsa
"media desperately hoping for a big hurricane"
Absolutely. That went into orgasms over the first tropical storm in Alberto in June and it was a weak one at best.
And they will drop covering the Middle East to cover whatever Cane threatens the US. They are going to look for whatever they can and hope things go bad post storm so they can blame Bush and give the Rats a microphone to use for the elections. Things could go flawless and the MSM would still try to drum up hysteria.

has the hurricane season not lived up to the hype so far? Charley didn't arrive until August 13, 2004 and we were hammered by numerous storms thereafter. August and September are normally the most active months in the Atlantic season. We've been fortunate this year so far. No doubt that's going to change.

We have actually been getting a lot of showers lately. Very unusual.

I am supposed to go to Port Aransas on Tuesday PM. Looks to be up in the air right now. Small storm into Corpus (or a little further South)then moving NW would not be bad. A few miles to the North then it's a mess.

THAT is the honest truth! Generally speaking, they can't wait for the next 'Katrina'. Even here, where they CLAIM not to want to unnecessarily upset anyone re. storms, they gave the coordinates of Beryl in relation to its distance from New Orleans. Nevermind it was in the Atlantic heading north, it was 'X hundred miles northeast of New Orleans'!!!!
I'd like to take all the disaster/storm junkies and lock them in a 100degree attic in any house still standing in Lakeview when their wished-for storm comes!
Somehow, I think they only get their jollies by watching the misery of others. They are safe from it in nice offices somewhere in Ohio.

Now where did this come from?
The area has been out there a couple of days as an upper level low pushing showers/thunderstorms into southeast Texas with some areas of heavy rain depending upon location and duration of the storms. Our locals have been expecting it to maybe develop or at least increase the showers over the next couple of days....
