PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - A steering problem caused a cruise ship to roll abruptly to the left Tuesday, injuring some passengers and terrifying many, Coast Guard officials and passengers said.
The Crown Princess, which can accommodate 3,000 passengers, had just departed Port Canaveral en route to New York when it listed badly to its port side, said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer James Judge.
The 113,000-ton ship began sailing a month ago. Judge did not know the number of people injured or how badly they were hurt.
"There were people running for life jackets, and then afterward a lot of people hugging and crying, people looking for children," Carol O'Connell told NBC's Miami affiliate, WTVJ-TV, by phone. "The captain sounded so terrified, which led to my feeling of more panic."
O'Connell said she saw flooding, tables overturned and broken glass everywhere.
The cruise ship was returning to port and was to be met by Coast Guard officials and medical personnel, Judge said.
Princess Cruises, one of 12 brands operated by Miami-based Carnival Corp., said the ship was safe. The company said it was investigating the cause of the incident.
"We're coming back to the port so some of the passengers can receive some additional medical attention," spokeswoman Julie Benson said.
Before leaving Port Canaveral, the ship has just completed a nine-day Western Caribbean cruise, she said.
Hmmmm....
That was one of the ships I was debating whether or not to cruise on next year.

Little red haired Jimmy was at the wheel when the captain asked him if he'd ever been in a Turkish prison.
This thing looks as top heavy as a 28'Searay sedan with a tuna tower. You won't catch me dead on it.
And what the hell kind of excuse is that - steering problem?
Whats that thing have single screws and no bow thrusters?
LOL.. We do smaller ships if we can,, big ships are easy to get lost on..
Go for it.
Thanks, I saw that.
Must have had a new cook.
SH*T happens....Nobody died, right?
The cruise I went on the rolls were pretty hard but edible with butter. Nothing to return to port over.
The captain sounded so terrified, which led to my feeling of more panic."
Not a good sign....
Here we go lawsuits, here we go (clap, clap, clap)...Here we go lawsuits...
Was Michael Moore or Rosie O'Donut on the vessel? Their stroll to the rail together could set this sequence of events off-
This one will be most interisting. There is absolutely no way this can happen with all the computers running this ship.
Here's good Crown Princess review site...lots of info:

Takin' them corners just a leetle too tight...
BELIEVE ME! It CAN happen. I've been on lots of cruises (I went cheap back in the day of airline discounts). Anyway, I've had TWO ships do exactly this! One was a Norweign line and the other was a Celebrity. Almost all the water in the pool flew out...dishes flying everywhere...perfume bottles breaking all over the floors of the gift shops. The Norweign ship supposedly hit a sand bar going out of port and listed greatly. The Celebrity cruise captain never even said one single word about what happened. It was outrageous. To be sure, both instances were extremely frightening!
It displaces more tonnage than the USS Ronald Reagan - fully loaded.
Ouch, some folks got hurt pretty badly per those accounts.
Thanks for the link.
PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - The Crown Princess, a cruise ship making its fourth voyage, suddenly rolled heavily to its left Tuesday, injuring dozens of people, including 10 or so seriously, officials said.
The ship had returned to port, where medical personnel were treating the injured. The exact number of injured was not immediately known. No deaths had been reported and all passengers and crew had been accounted for.
"It appears that as many as 10, possibly slightly more, could be severely to critically injured and another 30 to 40 moderately injured," Brevard County Sheriff Jack Parker said.
What are the chances of that happening twice? </garp>
LoL!
The media has no clue at all so don't pay much attention until there is an official report.
Lots of free cruises in addition to monetary payments will cost Carnival a bundle.
What I am saying is, this is impossible. He had to overide the computers and take manual command.
All of the computers would not let it sail into a sandbar. Once released by the Port Pilot it is in the hands of the Captain.
What is even more amazing is if the Captain took over manually, the computers would be screaming at him to take different actions.
We went on a sister ship to this one a year ago... when we came into port in San Diego, we passed the USS Ronald Reagan moored in port... For a large aircraft carrier, it looks small in comparison which was hard for me to believe...
On the old Carla Costa out of Miami you could actually go to the front of the ship when it was going out or in and feel the wind in your hair and get the excitement of being at or almost at the front of it.
The old Emerald Seas out of Miami was the same way.
I don't see a lot of ships where you can stand at the front like you used to. I could be wrong.
No my wife and I went for a walk to go out front like that scene on the titanic... on our ship it was a crew only area... there was a small pool there and sunbathing area... we could stand a couple decks up, just below the bridge and look down on them tho'. It was so windy later in our cruise they put up some yellow tape and closed the bow off completely, which I thought was a good thing after my wife (110lbs soaking wet) almost got blown off the ship!
The Port Pilot WAS involved in the one incident. I'm glad you've never had a problem. It is most frightening. People were horrified.
Wow, I haven't thought of the Emerald Seas for years. My husband and I went on that ship for a cruise to the Bahamas. We left Nassau on the night of a pretty bad storm. The ropes attached to the tug pulling us out of the harbor snapped. The whiplash killed a crew member. The Emerald Seas drifted to a jetty where we hit the rocks very hard. After wards the ship just sat at an incredible angle. All passengers had to put on life jackets and sit in common areas until the next day when the storm subsided and we could be evacuated. We haven't done very much cruising since then.
BTW, love your screen name. Am an avid NASCAR wacko here. Catch us Freepers at our live thread sometime during the race.

(Kidding, of course... though these days, I'm not sure it's not plausible...)
It was our first cruise and we were hooked. The service was great as well as the food.
According to my source, they took that ship to the Medeteranian for 4 more years and retired it. It is now a fish library somewhere.
Still, great memories there.
The food was great and so was the service. While we were in Freeport a few of the crew members would climb to the top of the ship and dive into the harbor. I thought it was incredibly dangerous, but they seemed to do it just for the entertainment of the passengers. We didn't have much in those days so cruising for a few days was quite a treat for us. :0)
LOL!
this is it

A family member was on a cruise out of the same port a few months back, and the same thing happened. The ship tilted enough to make people sick and to have to "hang on". Power was lost and the ship was "dead in the water." One member of their party threw up for a few hours... What's going on?
