PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A cruise ship took a heavy roll at sea, injuring several passengers, according to Coast Guard officials at Port Canaveral.
The Coast Guard did not report how many degrees the ship Crown Princess rolled before it righted itself. Officials only said that the ship experienced what it called "a steering casualty."
Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer James Judge said he didn't know how many people were hurt or how serious any of the injuries were.
The cruise ship is heading back to port.

Hope that everyone is ok.
Local news in Jacksonville just covered it. No link. But they said steering malfunction caused ship to list seriously to one side and some passengers had been injured. Ship on way back to port.
It sounds like there may be some injuries. I've asked the mods to replace the post with this article:

A cruise to BROOKLYN?
One of those big-uns?
Seems there are a lot of problems with cruise ships lately. Or maybe they are just really hyped.
Cruise to Brooklyn???
Taking all those Floriduhians back to their roots.
Was a zodiac full of muslims seen speeding away?
Every ship I have ever operated (or been on) was only capable of listing toward one direction. Listing in two or more directions is called "sinking".
I guess we have government-educated reporters giving us this information.
"a steering casualty."
Whatever that is?
A severe list like this no doubt required lots of changes of underwear.
Visions of the Poseidon Adventure.
OMG!! "before the ship righted itself"....Geesh....THAT"S scary!! Crown Princess is a big ship....it said "a steering casualty" was the problem....wonder what that means.
LOL!
Gotta remember to fasten that little plug in the transom before you let her slip off the trailer...
I don't see how this could be. Maybe the sterring is disabled due to damage, but just losing steering would not cause the ship to list.
LOL....good catch. Was listing astern with just the bow sticking out of the water?
"A severe list like this no doubt required lots of changes of underwear."
Oh, the humanity!
NBC4 news has passenger on phone. Boat listed about 50 degrees.
Says hundreds of passengers injured.
"...But they said steering malfunction caused ship to list seriously to one side..."
That doesn't make sense.

I seriously doubt it ACTUALLY listed 50 degrees - any list will feel like it's a lot further than it actually was.
HOLY CRAP! That thing had to have been hit by a giant wave to roll that far!
How much is 50 degrees? What position would the boat be in?
Michael Moore on board?
Eh, if it was at high speed and suddenly turned sharply, you'd have a pretty big list. I've seen pics of Nimitz class CVs on trials and the list when they turn at full speed is pretty impressive.
I believe these ships have got a self-leveling mechanism on them to help keep them from rolling in a storm. perhaps the problem is with this function.
LOL - PING
Thanks. I hardly think of Brooklyn as a cruise destination as it lacks glamor, palm trees, beaches, foreign cultures, and quaint natives of various shades of brown diving for dollars. Oh wait.
Just another reason to avoid cruises. The last thing I want is the entertainment director taking over when the rest of the crew abandons the ship (this actually happened!)
Makes you wonder about water-ballast pumps, fuel pumps & distribution side-2-side...
There's a shortage of seamanship somewhere here... IMHO
A jambed rudder will do that if the opposite thruster and leveling plane went at the same time (think of coordinated flight on an airplane).
I'm guessing some kind of hydralic malfunction in the steering system.
I really know absolutely nothing about this kind of ship or any ship.
"Whatever that is?"
Didn't know they still sold space in steerage.

Read my mind.
Steering Casualty just means something seriously broke in the steering mechanisms. Doesn't involve any humans getting hurt. Just naval-speak. Engineering Casualty means the engines severely broke, etc.
Imagine yourself tilting about the center point of standing upright and being flat on the floor. That's 45 degrees. I imagine flat on the floor would be 90 degrees. Sounds pretty serious.
Didn't you take math girl? On a clock it would be about on the 2, make it 2:05. ;-) When it got to 3, it would be on its side. 6 and it would be upside down.
Know the talent on FR it won't be long until we get to the bottom of this.
"Steerage". Crossed my mind too.
As a travel agent, I can assure you that this is an isolated situation. It seems like they were broadsided by a freak wave. Has anyone made the connection with a certain "triangle"?
Whenever you take a large group and throw them together, you make a perfect situation for exploitation. Sometimes it is newhounds, other times it is a robber thug throwing someone overboard, after hearing him brag about 20 grand in his room (duh!).
We heard incessant stories from Aruba, and too many people blamed an island community for the problems of one girl who had been on holiday. Aruba is a well-known place where you only have to be 16 to drink, and yet her parents didn't think enough of her to go along to supervise! then, it is the fault of the "Arubans", when ill befalls her.
Shiite happens everywhere...
Wanna go on a cruise? It's a hell of a lot safer than Brooklyn!
That had to be one sharp turn.
I'll bet the bridge is receiving all kinds of bad news from the galley(s) and dining areas. On vessels I have operated, the cooks have lost more than a few batches of baked beans that left their baking pan and went all over the galley due to the ship's roll, usually due to rough seas.
If you're making a turn and while making part of that turn it sets you in a wave trough in heavy seas, you're going to spill a few things. (Seems like it was almost always baked beans that it happened with).
Yes, sounds like the stabilizer fins got stuck, one up, and the one on the other side down.
Port Canaveral is in Fort Lauderdale.
Thanks so much for the mannerly answer...unlike ANOTHER freeper!!
I can't help it...."about five degrees more than a 45 degree list.
