Revealed: the man who killed 10,000 dogs
timesonline.com ^ | 7/16/06 | Daniel Foggo

Posted on 07/16/2006 4:42:30 AM PDT by beyond the sea

THE secret slaughter of at least 10,000 racing greyhounds by one man has been exposed by an undercover investigation.

For the past 15 years David Smith, a builders’ merchant, has been killing healthy greyhounds no longer considered by their trainers to be fast enough to race. He buries them in a one-acre plot at the back of his home in Seaham, Co Durham.

Last week The Sunday Times covertly filmed Smith on two consecutive days receiving greyhounds from trainers before killing them with a bolt gun, dumping them in the plot and covering over the “graves” using a mechanical digger.

He told an undercover reporter it took him three years to fill the field, at which point he simply started all over again. “Within a year the bodies have gone,” said Smith. “It takes me about three years to get across there and by the time I get there I can start back here again and there are only a few bones left.”

According to Sunday Times calculations and testimony of two racing insiders, it is conservatively estimated Smith has killed at least 10,000 dogs.

The scandal, described as the “canine killing fields” by one campaigner, has shocked the government and greyhound industry, which attracts bets of £2.5 billion a year.

Hmm, really? And of cattle? How about gangsta boyz' four-legged switchblades?

To try to force equivalency between man and beast is pathetic. The responses to killing men and beasts is disproportionate. Tagline...

They need out-law dog racing. Then they need to hunt down the breeders who are just as ruthless.

Is it any more disgusting than killing chickens or cows?

I love my dog, Spot. He is a member of my family.

These animals were bred for specific purposes, and were spent. I am sorry you were unable to adopt them all.

We plow filds under, when they don't grow well.

Shameful. I know a few people who have adopted greyhounds. They are fairly large, but have sweet dispositions (unless you are a rabbit) and are suprizingly lazy.

Real stupid of you. I am not trying to "force equivalency between man and beast". Not at all.

All many reasonable people want for these relatively young and quite gentle animals is a chance to live their life after their "work".

Your post, if I understand it, as you arrogantly proclaim, is "pathetic".

" I love my dog, Spot. He is a member of my family." --- Congratulations.

"These animals were bred for specific purposes, and were spent." --- "spent"? Wrong.

"I am sorry you were unable to adopt them all." --- Stupid sarcasm.

"We plow filds under, when they don't grow well." --- Another odious and meaningless analogy.

As long as Kennedy has a dog named splash I really don't wanna hear anything the lib's have to say.

That and the fact PETA destroys at least 80% of the animals they take possession of. Then there is the Humane Society who kills animals at a rate which makes this guy look like an amateur.

Yes, and thank you for your comment. We have programs here in Pennsylvania to place these wonderful dogs after they are done racing. They do indeed have very pleasant temperaments.

Animals are bred for food, for pelts/hides, for protection, for sport, for companionship, etc. To me dog racing seems wasteful since, by this article, it seems they go through thousands a year and I find it unlikely they'd find homes for them all. However they are animals. To put down an animal because the alternative is years in a cage in a shelter is not inhumane IMHO. I do think they should be put down as painlessly as possible. But the idea that animals should be treated like or equated with humans does not elevate the status of animals, it lowers the status of people.

Bolt gun

Think of an old fashion pop gun withe the cork on a string. Bolt gun is essentially the same except the cork is a wood or steel rod.

Personally, I think that people who cannot see the value of these good dogs after their very short racing careers "lower the status of people".

(jmo)

By the way ................. who was trying to "equate" animals with humans? Do you know what "equate" means?

There are other solutions though.

There are only a few organizations that try to place greyhounds. They would benefit from access to more facilities.

A large number Animal Shelters have been importing stray animals from 3rd world countries to maintain their numbers in order to continue to receive federal funds.

http://www.breederville.info/petnews/redefining.htm

Well, instead of importing 3rd world STRAYS, why don't they work with rescues who don't have the man power to house all the animals they are trying to place?

Therefore, the shelters maintain the numbers for the funds, rescues have a resource to put animals up while they try to place them, less animals get put down, and less rabiis get imported to the USA from these 3rd world animals.

As you can see from the photo, I chauffeur my dog, Spot, in a towncar. We drive over the mountain to go walking and running. He sometimes runs ahead of the car, and I have clocked him at 28 miles per hour for a steady quarter mile. He is not as fast as a greyhound, but he is my dog.

My analogy to chickens and cows is not absurd, unlike your attitude toward animals. Do you eat meat? How about grains, vegetables and fruits?

Would you ever eat monkey meat, or rattlesnake? How about squid or octopus? Does a lobster like to be placed in boiling water? Does it taste better with butter?

I love shrimp. In Thailand, they have made farm-raising them into an artform. so much so, that the Gulf shrimpers are asking for unfair price controls. Do you think the shrimp hurt when they get caught in a net? Does it matter?

In Japan, some cows live a luxurious lifestyle. They are massaged, and given beer and grains. At the peak of their life, they are slaughtered (with thanks given for their sacrifice), and sold as the best beef available on the face of the earth. They are close to correct!

My stupid sarcasm was intended as "sarcasm". That you consider it "stupid" reveals that you are very intolerant of differing ideas.

Life was created, I believe, by God. I refer to the God of Abraham, and Paul. God told me (and you, if you believe Him) to eat meat and "fruits of the fields". He gave us total dominion over them.

I guess you figure they are equals. The Scriptures tell us otherwise. They are to be food, as well as "bests of burden". They are for our entertainment, and amusement.

Of course you don't want a reply. It may make you think about something in a different manner! It can really be hell to be a bigot, can't it?

We met a bunch of adoption candidates at a "Dog Day" at a local park. I was surprised at how friendly they were, and it was difficult to leave without one...But like whippets, they do need a lot of exercise, so some adopters would benefit from a lifestyle change, anyway.

But that is probably why all of them are not adopted. They are not really a dog for someone who wants a lazy lap dog.

They like chasing Frisbees, etc.

A friend of mine took a beautiful blood hound he found to the pound because he thought they would try to find the owner. By the next day he found out they wouldn't look and went back to adopt it. The Humane Society wouldn't let him adopt it because blood hounds were unadoptable and killed it that same day.

Animals are treated pretty badly by a lot of different people. The difference seems to be the libs attempts to give animals the same rights as humans under the law. Unless of course they are in the care of a lib controlled organization.
