Mission imperative

The Bush administration should stop repeating that it is fighting the war on terror for truth, justice and the American way. Instead, the president and his staff should be blunt and explain that, since September 11, 2001, it has had to choose between options that are bad or far worse. By all means, the administration should invite critics to suggest constructive alternatives to the way it has handled this war. But it should also point out that those who have honed in on flaws in current U.S. antiterror policies have so far been bereft of other workable ideas. Take the uniformless and stateless terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay. To be sure, there are alternatives to the current U.S. policy, but are they any better? Should we try hundreds of them in U.S. courts like Zacarias Moussaoui or in international tribunals as the Europeans attempted with Slobodan Milosevic? Or send them home to face torture in autocracies like Egypt or Saudi Arabia? Or ship the terrorists back to countries that would simply declare them heroes and let them go? And can the critics offer better ways to track terrorists than through wiretapping and surveillance? How, otherwise, would one have learned in time about those in Miami who plotted to take down the Sears Tower, or the Lebanese cadre who planned to blow up the Holland Tunnel?

The President definitely needs more VDH and less Ward Cleever in his communication strategy.

Sending McClellan home was a good start, but...

Fine and dandy, except they are dealing with a media that does not always cover what they say, but brings in the Clintonistas instead. Haven't heard them caterwalling about Israel war yet, though. Whatever happened to the Roadmap?

Two way communication with the American people is definitly Bush's biggest problem. I think he believes everyone understands things the way he does. On the other hand he is truely baffled by things like the response to his immigration plan. Most of his time should be spent with average citizens. The things lacking in Washington are common sense and logic.

"Two-way communication with the American people is definitely Bush's biggest problem."

IMO, that's the problem with the entire Congress except for a scant one or two. I won't stop here to discuss the Supreme Court stomping on our Constitution and taking away American's property rights. They're all on ego trips and could care less what their constituents want or sent them to Washington to do. They're "in your face" with their arrogance. IMO, they could care less about the safety and security of this nation except when it means a vote here and there. None of them are living in the real world. All they want is power, power, more power. They act as if they're royalty in some foreign land. The American people better wake up before this royalty destroys our country and our freedoms. Voters need to send them packing; back to the real world to live in the mess they've created. They've feathered their own nests far too long at our expense.

The American people must be reminded of our challenges constantly in lieu of platitudes about the inevitable triumph of freedom and democracy. In short, our government should provide much more explanation of this complex war and far less simple declarations about it.

Exactly.

This Administration has been painfully incompetent on defending itself, not only in the war but on all other fronts as well.

As much as I loathed the Clintons and their smarmy crew, at least they knew how to get out their message - whether it was truthful or not. This Administration seems to think it just "happens" and that truth will automatically win out. It has hurt them badly on every front.
