Sure smacks of a 'softening up' procedure to me...knocking out critical bases and airstrips that could threaten a ground invasion...hmmmm. Get out the popcorn. Maybe that straw on the camel's back, finally broke.

Watching live interview on Fox with Israel leader (missed his name). Think it was someone in the state department. He was at site where Hez rockets had landed. "Said the rules were going to be changed." Said they would continue bombing Lebanon military because Lebanon was hosting the terrorists.

Said if it was going to be bad in Israel, it was going to be "hell" in Lebanon.

From Global Security:

"Today, the Lebanese Air Force has no real fixed wing capability. The few fighter aircraft they possess are old and outdated planes that have no combat value. Instead the Air Force has invested in helicopters with limited firepower and survivability. These aircraft are also bound to fair weather conditions because of their limited capability. Their continued operations are still heavily concentrated on domestic operations, primarily narcotics trafficking and other criminal violations.

Lebanon received much of its modern equipment at a discount from the United States and continues to purchase new systems from the U.S. as well. France also represents a large portion of Lebanon’s imports. In 2000, there were only apprximately 800 active personnel in the Air Force."

Just had a thought. The Dow is already down triple digits in early trading and the volume is very very heavy, which means we could be in for a rough day on the economic front. Usually these guys at the NYSE have a pretty good nose and good sources for international news, which means they don't expect this thing to get any better in the short term. The problem with these quickly escalating situations is that one side or the other takes it a step too far (for instance if Hizbullah fired missiles into Hafia or god forbid Tel-Aviv and killed a bunch of people) and then the situation literally gets out of control and the next thing you know the whole middle east is involved. We are pretty close to that already with this bombing of Lebanses military bases next to the Syrian border and with the threats to take out the Damascus-Beruit road. Buckle up

I believe that Israel is going to take this time to settle old scores while working to find its kidnapped soldiers.

I would love to see Israel say that if the hostages aren't returned in 12 hours, Iran will no longer be an oil producing country. Then in a show that they mean it, destroy the entire Syrian Air Force on the ground.

Add to it, prohibiting all Palestinians from working in Israel and then tell the UN to piss off.

Then tomorrow....

Make of this what you will from another message board:

"Did anyone notice that when Israel's public security minister was being interviewed on Fox News about 10 min ago, the reporter mistakenly said that a Syrian military base had been attacked, and the public security minister did not seem surprised...?"

I think a couple Syrian installations are going to be on the receiving end of the IAF no matter what happens and if the situation escalates even further you might even see a few sites around Damascus bombed. And if the Mossad gets a tip on Meshal's location in Damascus, watch out

Lebanon would be a jump off point for Iranian aircraft. Iran cannot fly to Israel directly. They would need a stopover to refuel. NOw they can't.

My bet is Israel is waiting for Syria to open the hangar doors. Don't think there is much else to bomb in Syria besides its aircraft.

Having the US in IRAQ is going to make it that much harder for Iran and Syria to help their terrorist buddies in Lebanon.

The U.S should send a couple of special forces units into Iran and Syria and take out some targets of opportunity while all of the Israel/Lebanon stuff is on the front pages...

That's to keep the other countries such as Iran, Russia from supplying equipment such as rockets, etc. They can't use the holed-up runways!

Liberals better hold onto their dirty underwear as the inevitable is starting. The rock-solid truth is that crying, whining, appeasing, hand-wringing, demonstrating in the streets, bashing Bush, screaming insults at the GOP on the floor of Congress, and the usual Liberal chicken maneuvers won't work against evil. The only thing that will work against this kind of evil is overwhelming force. Of course, if the Liberals want to give it their best shot, I suggest that Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and the rest of their ilk, fly themselves over to Syria, Iran, Lebanon, and try their kind of diplomacy (face to face) on this evil that is hell-bent on destroying us and Israel. In other words, let them put their useless ideas and words into action. Now, that would be worth sitting back with popcorn for.

You could be right - but you could be wrong. They may make very selective raids against known terrorist strongholds to wreak enough havoc and fear that the terrorists will think twice before touching another Israeli.

I doubt they will stop though, because the Arab shill money is too great to turn down.

Yes, just air drop them in -- they talk big, but that is all they are -- just talk, lies, criticism, negativism, anti-Americanism. But on the other hand, they might be welcomed, given they are the terrorists' best friend in Washington!!!

many folks have said the same thing the last four or five days, and I don't quite understand why. I do understand the potential for escalation, but in the early 80's when Israel went into Lebanon, Syria had a much larger footprint than they currently have, (I am not gullible enough to believe Syria has really left Lebanon, I think they've just cut back and are laying low a bit) Jordan and Israel did not have a peace treaty, and the regime in Iraq certainly was against Israel (the current Regime may be anti-Israel also, but I don't think they are in much of a position to say anything like that for a few more years anyway). I guess basically it unfolds like this for me, Syria, maybe Lebanon, and Hamas/Hezbullah against Israel. It may not be fish in a barrel, but I think Israel basically can do anything it wants in this conflict. Even if Iran wanted its planes to be in Lebanon to get involved the still have to ferry over us to get there, I doubt we'll grant that permission.

Sorry for the rambling.

Boy I really like this, the dumb Islamist's thought they could continue to get away with taunting Israel, killing and maiming its citizens. Well guess what, they wanted a war and by God the Israelis are going to give them one they may never forget. Amen.

The world's response to terrorist attacks, beliving they required criminal action, as opposed to military action, is what brings us to this point.

It is a little like the "broken window" theory of crime control. If a neighborhood accpets broken windows (and by extension, other petty acts of crimes) then the criminals move in and take over an area.

By accepting a certain amount of death, injuries and destruction, the world has allowed this problem to fester, and get out of hand.

I know there are some who view those that commit these terrorist acts as "heros" and "warriors" but that does not mean the victims must just accept the possibility that they will be blown up going to work.

One of the main functions of a government, any government, is the protection of their citizens. Most nations have refused to do what it would take to solve this problem.

The first step is to take away their finances.

That means oil money. That means we either take over their oil wells, or we destroy them.

Without money, most terrorist cells would be restricted in how much harm they can do.

Next, if there is going to be a World War, I would rather we fought it before Iran gets the means to deliver nuclear bombs to our shore.

I would also like it made clear that if they do manage to use a weapon of mass destruction against any of our citizens all bets are off, and it would be full scale WWII type reaction. That means everything is destroyed until one side surrenders.

It should never have gotten to this point. The anti-war crowd has a lot to answer for. War is not in and of itself a bad thing. I would say, being fearful of waging war is worse. If you are not prepared to fight, then you may as well surrender and give everything you own to which ever bully threatens you.
