BREAKING JPOST NOW

IDF LAYS LAND, AIR, SEA SIEGE TO LEBANON

Israel laid siege Thursday morning to Lebanon, shutting down the country and closing off access by air, land and sea.

IDF navy missile ships were patrolling off the Lebanese coast and preventing ships from entering Lebanon or leaving. Any ships arriving at Lebanese shores were being turned back.

If they are going to perform a blockade, this is a defacto declaration of war against Lebanon. ..it has hit the fan.

If they are actually going to do a blockade, it probably means they are going to officially declare war against Lebanon. Hmm...this is going to mix things up a little.

Good luck on killing murderers Israel!

"Total blockade and hit the power plants too."

Exactly. Don't let anyone "in country" sit at home in luxury. No electricity. No news.

Take out their telephone exchanges, cable, internet, radio/TV stations, etc.

Nothing gets in. No one leaves.

They can all sit in the dark thinking if it's really worth it to keep holding those Israeli soldiers.

Bring the war to the whole nation, to all of their people. The average Mohamed on the street corner isn't going to see holding Israeli soldiers as being worth more than his A/C and TV, news, and hot coffee (an import that can't be imported during the blockade).

Israel can't blockade Lebanon. Lebanon has a huge border with Syria. Any stuff Hezbollah needs will just come in through Syria. THis whole blockade is pointless.

"So, any thoughts as to who sends the first wave of would-be-blockade-breakers en route to martyrdom? They needle just went up one full notch-plus."

No, the needle would have gone up for an occupation of Lebanon.

The blockade is more clever. Cut the whole country off from civilization. Send in SpecOps on raids. Overfly the country and bomb targets as they are found, day after day.

No one can leave. No imports arrive. Let the whole population weigh civilization/luxuries versus holding those Israeli soldiers.

Israel says navy blocks Lebanese seaports
13/07/2006 07:41

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel said on Thursday its naval vessels were in Lebanon’s territorial waters and blocking access to ports as part of an offensive launched after Lebanese Hizbollah guerrillas captured two soldiers in a border clash.

"Since this morning Israeli naval vessels have enforced a full naval closure on Lebanon, because Lebanon’s ports are used to transfer both terrorists and weapons to the terror organisations operating in Lebanon," a military spokesman said.

My own views are as such:

Israel has shown many times that it wants peace with its neighbors, even to the point of of harming itself as a Nation. But it's neighbors have shown time and again that they will except nothing but the destruction of Israel.

Therefore I say Israel must lay down the gauntlet and show once and for all that it cannot be destroyed. Enough is enough.

The border with Syria is still fully open. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Syrians are "invited" back in to save their Lebanese brothers. The stuff will just come in through Syrian ports at Latakia and through Damascus. This blockade is just pr. All huff and no puff.

So, Israel will effectively declare war on Syria is what you're saying? I don't buy it. Further, this would give the Syrians the cover they need to re-enter Lebanon. And I bet Hezbollah has stocks in the Bekaa that can last for years. They haven;t been doing nothing for the past 6 years. They;ve been preparing for this day.

Syria's not going to do squat with the U.S. Army on its Iraqi border.

Unlike armchair pundits, Assad knows full well that the U.S. could re-conquer Iraq at its leisure if necessary, thus its Armor is free to take Damascus should the U.S. decide that is in our interest.

Which is to say: Syria may talk big, but will act very, very little.

So it still looks like up to this point, Israel has conducted military operations that were aimed strictly at trying to find their hostages. Blockade Seaports. Ruin airport runways. Start ground probes. Take out known strongholds.

From Austin Bay:

Note the releatively muted US and –so far– European condemnation of Israel’s actions against Hamas.

Now Israel is moving against Hezbollah, after Hezbollah launched attacks on northern Israel and captured two Israeli soldiers.

Two quick theories:

Theory One: Iranian insanity on nukes has tried European patience. Hezbollah is a financial creature of Tehran.

Theory Two, cast as a fair question: Have the Egyptians, Fatah, Saudis, and Lebanese governments given Israel an implicit go-ahead? The strategem: Reduce these violent factions (Hamas and Hezbollah) and then every one will re-set the chess table.

Israel is making good on its pledge to turn the clock back for the Lebanese 20 years. They will stand to lose a lot if they soldiers are not returned to Israel safe and unharmed. And there are other addresses to send messages to also. Israel is not short on options.

From Captain’s Quarters:

>>> Egyptian ruler Hosni Mubarak blames Syria and Bashar Assad for scotching a deal last week that could have resolved the crisis in Gaza. Egypt had worked out a deal with Israel and Hamas to trade prisoners for abducted soldier Gilad Shalit, but "outside pressure" caused Hamas to renege at the last moment:<<<

>>>Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa denied his country had a role in either the Hamas or Hezbollah abductions. .. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak implicitly accused Damascus of wrecking his attempts to mediate a deal for the release of Cpt. Cpl. Gilad Shalit, snatched by Hamas-linked militants on June 25. <<<

>>>Hamas was subjected to "counter-pressures by other parties, which I don't want to name but which cut the road in front of the Egyptian mediation and led to the failure of the deal after it was about to be concluded," Mubarak told Cairo's Al-Ahram Al-Massai newspaper. <<<

>>>No one with any understanding of the sponsorship of Hamas and Hezbollah takes the Syrian demurral. Both Hamas and Hezbollah take order from Syria and Iran, and both have headquarters in Damascus. The Israelis and the Egyptians have both said that the Palestinian chapter of Hamas has never controlled the Shalit abduction, but that the terrorists responsible took orders from Khaled Mashaal. Mashaal himself has taken responsibility for the operation by setting forth the demands under which Shalit would be released. Mashaal is no more than Bashar Assad's sock puppet, and neither Hamas nor Hezbollah would dare take action against Israel without coordination from the Assad regime.<<<

>>>Egypt isn't fooled. They have pressured Assad from the beginning to put an end to the operation, but he has refused to do so. Syrian government officials have stated that Israel may wind up retaliating against them, and unless Hamas and Hezbollah return the abducted soldiers, that may happen soon. The IDF has already started hitting Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon and pushing troops back across the border in an effort to retrieve the soldiers taken today.<<<

>>>Olmert may decide that he has had enough of the proxy war waged against Israel by Assad and his creaking regime. A quick strike at the Syrian air force would leave Assad at the mercy of the Israelis, and having 135,000 US troops in Iraq would probably convince the Iranians to sit this one out, as long as we don't join in ourselves. The time may never be better to take the war on terror into one of the two hearts of the enemy -- Damascus.<<<

Those hostages are about as hot as enriched uranium right now. Probably only a nutjob like the Iranian President would even handle them.

What worries me most is the logistics of the big map posted to this thread. Not too good for the U.S. coalition if the entire Arab World along with Iran, Syria and Lebanon ends up going to war against Israel.

I do not buy any Israeli war against Syria either. Not in the current situation.

The old problem is that Israel has to deal with the bitter fact that the populations of all surrounding countries are hating them. That is not different in Syria or Lebanon. Therefore it is quite difficult to hold this area for such a small country like Israel, since the resistance (even after a gained war) will be powerful. The millitary and economic damage as a result to a occupation for the society of Israel would be simply horrible since it is going to cost rivers of blood n' money and it will be no solution of the key issue either.

This is the reason why Israel tries to withdraw from all arabic land if it is possible to them.

Therefore their millitary actions will be restricted to some punishment. As long as the general circumstances will not change it stays a difficult situation for Israel.

Thanks for the info. Things look like they are 'under control' for now. Keep a lookout for something else to potentially be meant as a trigger. Everyone is now currently looking AT the Middle East (except for the main US populace which is probably being shown MSM stories of how Israeli Air Strikes might be affecting Michael Jackson in Bahrain).
