I don't get it.

John Wayne Gacy.

But I think he preferred young men.

Clowns are definitely one of the dead end paths of Western Civilization.

(one of my all time favorite scenes)

[George talking to Eric, the clown at Robin's son's birthday party.]

GEORGE: Bozo?

ERIC: No.

GEORGE: B-O-Z-O?

ERIC: Sorry, I...

GEORGE: You've never heard of Bozo the Clown?

ERIC: No!

GEORGE: How could you not know who Bozo the Clown is?

ERIC: I don't know, I just don't.

GEORGE: How can you call yourself a clown and not know who Bozo is?

ERIC: Hey, man - what are you hassling me for? This is just a gig, it's not my life. I don't know who Bozo is, what - is he a clown?

GEORGE: Is he a clown? What, are you kidding me!?

ERIC: Well, what is he?

GEORGE: Yes, he's a clown!

ERIC: Alright, so what's the big deal! There's millions of clowns!

GEORGE: Alright, just forget it.

ERIC: Me forget it? You should forget it! You're livin' in the past, man! You're hung up on some clown from the sixties, man!

GEORGE: Alright, very good, very good...go fold your little balloon animals, Eric. Eric! (chuckles) What kind of name is that for a clown, huh?

Huh? Your reference is obscure to me. Gacy was a serial killer--what does that have to do with clowns?

Some selected passages from the web:

They spoke of his mood swings and how he tried to trick them into handcuffs, using
magic tricks that he perfected as "Pogo the Clown".

and

This story [Ringling Bros pedo clown] elicits bad memories of John Wayne Gacy,...Gacy had worked
as a clown hired for children's birthday parties. But Gacy had other identities in his community.
He was also a precinct captain for his local Democratic party group, and he was a private
contractor and business owner.

And, iirc, a lot of his prison art self-portraits were of his clown persona.

Is it your contention that those who fear clowns are reacting to Gacy? Or did you have some other point? What was your point in responding to my expressed ignorance of clown-phobia with a reference to Gacy?

I just pointed out a clown that one could fear rationally.

You asked for the connection between Gacy and clowns, I responded.

Clowns have been used as a theme for good and evil. Even from outer space ("Killer Klowns").

I don't know, maybe the few that have the irrational fear are okay to make fun of.

Ask your daughter if she knows who "Pennywise the Clown" is from Stephen King's horror book/mini-series IT.

Clowns always gave me the willies, too. Maybe because of their exaggerated features. They look demonic.
