Book review: Danica - Crossing the Line
680news.com ^ | July 1, 2006 | Melissa Murphy

[snip}

Her memoir charts her rise from go-kart champion at 10, three solitary teenage years competing in England, and dealing with Danica Mania at the Indy 500 last year, when at 23 she became the first woman to lead the race. (She finished fourth.)

The book offers a driver's-seat perspective and details Patrick's gritty determination to deal with the sexism she has faced throughout her career.

[snip]

The tone of Patrick's book suggests it's aimed at young women, as it's sprinkled with dating advice ("If your boyfriend has another girlfriend, you are not his girlfriend") and self-esteem tips ("What makes you different makes you great").

There are inspirational quotes throughout by Madonna, Phil Jackson and Dolly Parton, among others, and photos of her early years in racing and of her wedding last year to Paul Hospenthal, a physical therapist.

Saw her at a New York book signing in May. She wasn't a happy camper and hostile.

Maybe she needs a few more inspirational quotes from Dolly Parton or Madonna.

All I know of this woman is what I saw of her in some commercial where she was competing at video racing games against young boys.

She didn't come across as sympathetic.

Patrick's gritty determination to deal with the sexism she has faced throughout her career.

That's why she did these?

Don't knock Dolly ... there was a post yesterday or the day before about her early days on tour by herself that would be an inspiration to anyone. While both entertainers, Madonna is definitely not in the same league.

Does the book come complete with centerfolds ?

Sex sells. Her driving doesn`t.

Not many curves. Is she a drag racer?

She's only famous for be the best looking Indy racer. And since her competition is all male, it's a pretty useless claim to fame. No offense, but Danica is a very ordinary looking woman. And an average woman can look like a centerfold with the right photographer... especially if she's willing to drop her clothes every time she hears a shutter clicking.

Question is - When is she ever happy? Everytime the camera turns in her direction she always has a scowl on her face. Lighten up Danica...and mix in a win or two sometime during your career.

For god sake, give her some credit. She was a rookie at the 500 last year and just about won the whole damn thing. She had a great showing this year as well. She has a bright future ahead of her in racing.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com who... me???

i'd of liked to hear the radio traffic here at the Glen last year when she shut her car off by hitting the KillSwitch!!!

bet she skips right over the part about being dumped for sleezing around europe with the eurotrash while she was there too...

Then maybe she should of held off until she actually won a indy race to have a book come out.

She reminds me of Anna Kournikova. Can look good with a bunch of makeup, but was always coming in 3rd or worse in competitions.

Jeez, tough crowd on this thread. I think she's a fine looking woman, and an inspiration to girls like my daughter.

People who think she's unusually mean or hostile must not have spent much time around race car drivers (or fighter pilots, or surgeons...) They live their public lives on a different plane of existence. I'm sure when the pressure to perform is off her, she's as pleasant as anyone else.

By all means, I wasn't knocking Dolly. I was just amused that she was lumped in with Madonna and such.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com silly cow was being groomed in europe to race in open wheel formula.

there are three stories.

1. she was "partying" waaay too much and was dropped.

2. she was "partying" waaay too much and was dropped, begged for her ride back and got it back.

3. she was "partying" waaay too much and was dropped, begged for her ride back and was dropped anyway.

i don't remember but i think she was dropped then picked up by Rayhull.

Obviously she has some skills if she's racing at Indy. However, for someone who has never won a race at any level she gets more pub than everyone else combined.

As for running good at Indy - In a series where every unnecessary ounce is shaved from the cars, take away 75-100 lbs from the other driver's cars and see if she finishes fourth.

What's your point? That she weighs 100 pounds less than the other drivers? Have you ever come face to face with an Indy car driver? They don't weigh over 200 pounds.

This isn't a freaking horse race.

OK, maybe not 100 lbs over the field - generally most drivers are said to be between 150-160lbs. (Sam Hornisch weighs a bit more even)

The point is that a 1550 lb Indy car with a 4-11 95lb Danica is going to get better performance and mileage than the rest of the field. Just simple physics dealing with the advantages of having a greater power-to-weight ratio that the other drivers.

I'm not saying she isn't a good driver. But I don't know many drivers who have never won on any level yet are afforded a top ride (Rahal Letterman). I think a male with comparable credentials doesn't even get a foot in the door.

I think Danica herself says it best when stated that she has advanced in auto racing because of her "good looks".

OK. And let's make Shaq play basketball on his knees to level the playing field.

Actually Shaq levels the playing field with his horrid foul shooting ability - thus the hack-a-shaq. :)
